Grauzone - Grauzone (1981)

Grauzone is a swiss post-punk/electronic group from the early 80s, prime material from the Neue Deutsche Welle scene, essentially the Deutsch incarnation of icey, metallic-inhuman electronic rock. Their first LP.

The Spiderz - Pressure (1979)

Some of the punk bands started from scratch, but some evolved from pubrock. The Clash in England, and in The Netherlands, The Flying' Spiderz did the same, this becoming the first punk band. In the punk days they released two albums and various 7"s, and had a fierce live reputation. They were dumped by EMI and the band dropped the name Flying and just became The Spiderz. This post is their first album (or third) 'Pressure', when the band progressed into a more power pop/new wave sort of sound.

Hagar The Womb - A Brighter Shade Of Black (2011, compilation)

Hagar the Womb were a female fronted, rather colorful and refreshing band, who wanted to have a little more fun than just shouting out the same gloomy political message that so many other bands were doing. After being ignored and laughed at by the men who ran the Wapping Anarchy Centre for trying to speak their minds and contributing ideas, several of the women decided to start a band so they could be taken more seriously. In London during 1980, Ruth, Karen, Amden and Nicola Corcoran all decided to become the vocalists, Janet Nassim became the guitarist and Stepth Cohen played the bass, while Andy Martin from The Apostles helped them by giving them a place to practice in and a drummer named Scarecrow.
Even though nobody in the band besides Scarecrow knew how to play anything, they were offered their first gig at the Centre, but the band claims that the people who were setting it up only did it because they didn't think they would be ready since they were to have it a week after forming.
Still, the band pulled it together, came up with a name that had no meaning, and played a somewhat chaotic gig supporting The Mob and Zounds featuring early versions of "Dressed to Kill" and "Puff the Magic Dragon".
Despite the gig being poorly played due to the lack of musical experience, the band received plenty of positive support, so they decided to continue with the project. Next, J.F.B.(Jon from Bromley) was recruited on second guitar, while Scarecrow was replaced behind the drum set by Chris 'Elephant Face' Knowles from the band Cold War.
Several of their vocalists left soon after, leaving just Ruth and Karen. After several gigs, people began to take notice of the band, their lyrics, which were much more personal instead of always about war and bombs, and their clothes, which were more colorful and not black like what several "Crass clone" bands were doing. Instead of being anti-everything, the band were anti-labeling and tried to be wild.
Soon enough, Crass's "Feeding of The 5000" got into their hands and gave them it's influence. The band also had connections with the Kill Your Pet Puppy collective, since one of their members was living at their house after being kicked out of her own home for dyeing her hair red. After recording their first demo, the track 'For The Ferryman' was pulled by Conflict to appear on their label Mortarhate's 'Who? What? Why? When? Where' compilation.
However, their bassist Steph left soon after, and was replaced on bass by Mitch Flacko who came from other bands such as The Crux, The Snork Maidens and Flack. Soon enough, J.F.B. was replaced on second guitar by Paul Harding, also from Cold War, and gigs were luckily easy for the band to play, since they lived near clubs such as the 100 Club, Marquee, Fulham Greyhound and the Moonlight Club.
In 1984, Hagar The Womb released their first E.P. titled "Word of The Womb" on Conflict's Mortarhate label. It was engineered by Pete Fender from Rubella Ballet/Omega Tribe at Heart and Souls Studios, Walthamstow. The band got the opportunity to release that E.P. because they had been playing several gigs before it with Conlict. It hit the Indies chart and went up to number six with the track "Dressed to Kill" becoming the favorite, and also appearing in Sean Mcghee's "Anti-Society" compilation, but with the guitar solos heavily quieted down. The band continued by playing several more gigs to promote it.
Slightly after the release of the E.P. and recruiting a third vocalist by the name of Elaine Reubens, John Peel invited the band to come down and record a Peel session, but due to complications with their lyrical content and struggles to find a drum set, the band ended up sounding kind of rough and not how they really were. Afterwards, the band had a fallout with Mortarhate due to trust issues, and decided to go to Abstract Records to release their next E.P. in 1985 titled 'Funnery In A Nunnery'.
Unfortunately, their bassist Mitch left the band before a gig they had with The 3 Johns at Dingwalls in Camden, and was replaced by Paul 'Veg' Venables. Sometime during 1987 the band came to a halt with no explanation or dramatic end. Paul and Vedge went on to play with We Are Going To Eat You and Melt, while Mitch became a roadie for The Mekons and is now a tour manager.
2011 has become a good year for Hagar The Womb. A retrospective record has just been released titled 'A Brighter Shade Of Black' on Mississippi Records.

Rubella Ballet - Anarchy In The U.V. (2008, compilation)

Even more colorful than Hagar The Womb, Rubella Ballet was another creative band that wanted to get away from the black 'uniforms' several other bands were wearing while shouting out that lyrics weren't always about the bomb or wars. Formed in 1979, after several random practices(live ones) and vocalists including Annie Anxiety, the band ultimately came to a steady line up consisting of Zillah Minx on vocals, and three of The Fatal Microbes' ex-members. Sid played drums, Gem played bass and Pete Fender played guitar. Due to their connections with Crass, and Gem and Pete being Poison Girls' vocalist/guitarist Vi Subversa's children, the band found themselves fortunate enough to find places to play at without difficulty, a label to release music with and equipment. The band first appeared live during a Crass/Poison Girls concert at the Conway Hall in Redo Lion Square, London, but played their first 'real' gig at a fundraiser, opening for Poison Girls at the Theatre Royal in Stratford.
In 1980, the band released their first batch of material in a cassette titled "Ballet Bag" with some additional guitar work from Andy Smith. The band had decided to work on the release by themselves, so they spent days creating, writing, printing and putting together the lyric booklets, badges and tapes into individual bags. In the end, nearly five thousand copies were sold. It was released on Poison Girls' Xntrix label.
Slightly later, Sid was recruited by Flux of Pink Indians on drums to play in their "Neu Smell" E.P in 1981. Due to Crass's drummer Penny Rimbaud telling Sid that he should do more drum rolls, Rubella Ballet refused their single that was being offered to them on Crass Records. However, the main reason why they didn't want to release a single with Crass was because they did not want to be told how to sound and didn't want to have the same black and white sleeve that all the other bands were getting. They wanted to do everything the way they wanted to, with a color sleeve.
Rubella Ballet's first single "Ballet Dance" was was recorded and released in 1982 on the Xntrix label. It shot into the Indie top ten and led to two John Peel Sessions on July 6th, 1982, and February 8th, 1983. In 1982, however, Pete Fender left Rubella Ballet to focus on Omega Tribe and was replaced by Mark Adams from the Chaos Bros. Mark was featured in the second John Peel Session. By 1985, Gem was not in the band anymore and had been replaced by Adam and Zillah's younger sister Rachel 'Rachel Minx' Irene Jane Ashworth, and their 'Money Talks' 12" was released that year on the Ubiquitous label. Later but also during that same year, Adam was replaced by Steve Cachman, and their debut L.P. 'At Last It's Playtime' was released, once again on Ubiquitous.
However, the constant line up changes were beginning to exacerbate the band's progress. Each time they acquired new guitarists and bassists, they had to teach them their sets, but their recruits would either become to drunk to play them live or leave the band before they could even become a part of it which frustrated Sid and Zillah.
Next, In 1986, their 'If' L.P. and 'Artic Flowers' single were released on the Ubiquitous label. Afterwards, 1986 saw the release of their 'Cocktail Mix' album(Ubiquitous) and in 1988, the 'Birthday Box' double-L.P.(a live L.P.) was released. By 1990, the band released their last album titled 'At The End Of The Rainbow' on Brave records.
Unfortunately, Rubella Ballet split in 1991 after their last gig at the Camden Palace. Zillah and Sid decided that they had had enough, seeing as though another guitarist and bassist had left the band, and went to play in a dance band they had already formed prior to the split named Xenophobia.

Kaos Rock ‎– W.W.3 (1980)

Welcome to the raw, wild and psycho-o-phonic sound of this wild punk rock band from Milan. The group were formed in 1979 by Luigi Schiavone (guitar), Gianni Muciaccia (bass), Maurizio Granata (drums), Gianfranco Segatto (guitar) and Cesare Pedrotti (vocals). These restless young teenager were immediately attracted by the wind Punk Rock and also from the slums of unhealthy Lower East Side and CBGB's in New York (R.I.P.) which brings a raw and powerful sound over the ocean and they had enough from melody and romanticism shit which was characteristic of the Italian light music. So they start Kaos Rock, a musical revolution, a real electric shock. From the capital of Lombardy the band had the opportunity to get a rehearsal room and played first gigs. Eventually the Italian label Cramps Records released their debut record "WW 3" (World War 3) in 1980 and after the album two 7inches followed and shortly after its release the label unfortunately closed its doors. In 1981 the very short and intense career of Kaos Rock ends. Awesome fourteen killer songs record!!!

Flue - One And A Half (1981)

Here's the first album of Dutch band Flue. Has been reissued on CD with extra tracks but in a ridiculously small quantity. Together with Mecano, one of the bands that rose from the Ultra movement.
Their music is a mixture of coldwave and guitar new wave with strong sober melodies and a dark feel. The bands consisted of four members: Edward (vocals, synthesizers), Judith (synthesizers), Jerome (bass) and Hans (drums). The producer of the group was no less than Dick Polak, lead singer for another legendary Dutch new wave band, Mecano. Flue released two albums in the 80’s, “One And A Half” and “Vista”, both were issued on vinyl only and are extremely hard to find nowadays. One And A Half, originally recorded in 1981, has been digitally remastered and expanded with 7 rare bonus tracks. One track is a single B-side and six tracks are demo recordings from the rehearsal room.

The Tourists - Reality Effect (1979)

Reality Effect is the second album by the British band The Tourists, released in 1979. This album received much more favourable reviews than the band's first album, with catchier songs and a stronger reliance on the vocals of singer Annie Lennox. The album contained two hit singles, "So Good to Be Back Home Again" and a cover of the 1964 Dusty Springfield song "I Only Want to Be With You". Although the band featured Lennox and her future Eurythmics partner Dave Stewart on guitar, the bulk of the songs were written by singer/guitarist Peet Coombes. The album peaked at #23 on the UK Album Chart, and spent a total of sixteen weeks in the Top 100.

Kliché - Supertanker (1980)

Danish new wave band (1977-1985) from Aarhus, instrumental in bringing industrial new Wave to Danmark. Founded 1977 by Lars Hug (Lars Haagensen - later Lars H.U.G.), Jens Valo (Jens Danielsen) and Johnny Voss (Johannes E. Møller). Soon drummer Anders Brill (Anders Gilberg) joined the band. Kliche gave their first concert on May 5th, 1978 at Vestergade 58 in Århus. In 1980 they released their fist album "Supertanker", which gave the band a hit with "Militskvinder". The song lyrics are originally by the chinese leader Chairman Mao Zedong.
Shortly after the release Valo left the band and was replaced by Steffen Brandt (Later to front tv-2), who in 1981 was replaced by Nils Torp (Later to found Souvenirs).
In October 1982 Kliche (Now spelled Kliché) released the album "Okay Okay Boys" recorded with a mobile unit at Svinkløv Badehotel. In 1985, while working on their 3rd album, the band was officially dissolved. Later that year Lars H.U.G. released his first of a string of succesful albums..
In 2006 the "Supertanker" album - much to Lars H.U.G.'s dismay - was marked as part of "Kulturkanonen" (a official list of essential Danish cultural heritage set a ship by the liberal/conservative government).

Lost Kids - Bla Bla (1980)

Bla Bla is the first longplayer by the Danish Lost Kids from Copenhagen. Founded by Jan Jet 1978 after a trip to Britain. Danish cover versions of first generation punk songs were frequent in the early repertoire, which were revitalized by Jan Jets fresh word-games. With Sods the most famous band from this small Scandinavian country. After two 7inches, Fodt Som Nul and Cola Freaks, the record was released via Medley Records and is with seventeen songs perfectly loaded. What I particularly like is this record has a great variety, female/male singing, short punk goodies, reggae and a little pop stuff and the singalong factor is enormously high. The use of many instruments is positive as well and garnished here and there with decent short guitar solos.

SORT SOL (feat. Lydia Lunch) - Dagger & Guitar (1983)

Sort Sol is a rock band from Copenhagen, Denmark - these days a trio with Steen Jørgensen, Lars Top-Galia and Tomas Ortved. The band was formed in 1977 as a punk rock outfit, originally under the name Sods. Despite changes in the group's line-up their current name, which translates into English as Black Sun; a commonly known expression for the phenomenon occurring, when starlets gather in huge flocks before migrating in the autumn in Denmark, has remained with them since the early 1980s. For reasons unknown, the Danish press often refers to their musical style as 'punk', though nearly everything they have put out since 1980 is more reminiscent of styles such as post punk & goth.

The band was formed in Copenhagen, 1977. The original lineup consisted of: Steen Jørgensen (vocal), Peter Schneidermann (guitar), better known as Peter Peter, Knud Odde (bass guitar) and Tomas Ortved (drums). The band released their first record Minutes to go February 1979 and it is considered the first Danish punk album. They went on to release Under En Sort Sol in 1980, a more experimental album, influenced in part by Joy Division, Pere Ubu and Television.

T. S. Høeg (sax) (Cockpit Music) entered the group for a short while in late 1980. In 1981 the group released their first single under the name Sort Sol. The single "Marble Station" (b/w Misguided) is only released in England on the record label 4AD. In March 1981 the group played their first concert outside of Denmark. 1983 saw the release of the album Dagger & Guitar, featuring punk idol Lydia Lunch. In 1985 Lars Top-Galia(guitar) joined the group, and the line-up remained like this until 1996, when Peter Peter left due to arguments within the band, partly owing to artistic differences. In 1988 they made the album Everyhing that rises must converge which has been described as the their artistic breakthrough. The album consists of 10 slowpaced tracks that rely heavily on the talented deep voice of Steen Jørgensen. In 1991 they made their first CD which was Flow my firetear. This was the first of their records reaching a broad audience. They reached their peak popularity three years later with Glamourpuss which sold 100.000 records in Denmark.

The Rousers - Touched (1980)

Holland's The Rousers were formed when brothers Cocke and Jan de Jong, inspired by The Ramones and the Damned, started a band playing cover songs. Two years later they joined forces with brothers Bonne and Wieb Zigtema and bass player Rob Marienus. They combined the energy of punk and the melodies of 60's beat music and invented what they called "new beat". They released the LP "A Treat Of New Beat" (Torso, 1979) which combined jagged guitar riffs, vocal harmonies and witty lyrics like into two minute pop gems. "Magazine Girl" was the first single and was well received but got banned from the radio because of the topless girls on the sleeve. After a disappointing second album "Touched" (Torso, 1980) The Rousers broke up.

In 1982 most of the band went on to form The Thought. The band still relied on it's 60's influences but added psychedelics and bombast. They had an unexpected underground club hit in the United States with the a cover of the Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much Dream Last Night" which led to a major label deal and their well received second album. After the release of their third and last LP the band broke up in 1986.

The Rousers - A Treat Of New Beat (1980) + singles

A real masterpiece of PowerPop classic is the debut record by this combo. The Rousers from Broek op Langedijk (near under the smoke of Alkmaar) were one of the first Dutch New Wave bands. Inspired by the new momentum in the British pop music the band was founded on 19 September 1977 by the brothers Cock (vox + guitars) and Jan de Jong (drums), along with Rob Marienus (bass) and Theo van der Plas. In the beginning they play their own work and some covers. They played songs by The Beatles, The Damned, The Ramones and The Buzzcocks and this combination would determine the sound that the band develops and that they refer to themselves as New Beat. In January 1979 the Wieb (guitars) and Bonne Zigtema (vox) brothers join the band, Theo left. In the same year the first 7inch 'Magazine Girl' was released on Ariola/Torso and became a legend. Quickly they became celebrated, no wonder with their bright guitars, polyphonic harmonies and rhythmic clapping, the influence of the early beat music is clearly cognisable. Nevertheless, the band has a distinctly contemporary sound. After this record the band released all in all three singles and a second album called 'Touched'. 1981 the band broke up and split into The Thought and The Shavers.

Choir Invisible - Choir Invisible (1981)

Choir Invisible were a four piece post-punk band hailing from Los Angeles. The band formed in the wake of the Flyboys, a first wave LA punk band, who split after the death of bassist/keyboardist David Wilson.

Lisa Fancher, head of Frontier records (who released the lone Flyboys 12” in 1980), essentially pieced Choir Invisible together after the Wilson’s death. The band grew to local prominence, opening for the likes of Romeo Void, Depeche Mode, and Christian Death in the early 1980s, before releasing their debut record in 1981.

Though the band split shortly after their 1981 tour, a few straggling members recorded a follow up in 1982, which was released two years later on Passport records. I shall upload this one for my next post, but in the meanwhile, here’s the info for the band’s 1981 self-titled debut.

Debut album by the french punky heavy metal band Shakin' Street consist with ex-Téléphone members and Ross "The Boss" Friedman (ex-The Dictators, ex-Manowar). Lead singer female Fabienne Shine makes Shakin' Street sounds like Joan Jett and Suzi Quatro plays Girlschool songs!

Clair Obscur - A Collection Of Isolated Tracks 1982-1988

This collection contains a variety of the band's works from the 80's. Like other self consciously tortured artists (i.e. Virgin Prunes) Clair Obscur is a hit or miss band. In their best moments, their dark, wry sense of style shadows contemporary music mocking all of the things you hold dear. At their worst they present an unlistenable mess, burdoned by their arrogant pretentiousness. This album showcases all of these elements. The first half of the album contains dark, post-punk dirges. The most notable song on this part of the album is "Froh" which sounds like it came straight off of a Bauhaus album. There is also an instrumental version of their utterly cold "hit" "Die Kinder Sind Allein". But mostly these are rough works that lead to the band's parody of modern life, shown on the second half of the album in fine form. Amongst these is the theatrical, bitter rant "Smurf in the Gulag" which is followed by the similarly brooding "Till the Morning Light". The album is closed out by one of their many versions of "Blume" featuring a tortured French Artiste singing to what sounds like a disco version of a Death In June song. Make of it what you will.

Blue Orchids - The Once and Future Thing (2016)

Once upon a band called The Fall, Martin Bramah was the original guitarist in this most important and seminal Manchester group. But the overwhelming directing fist of Mark E. Smith dictated otherwise and Bramah left along with original keyboard player, Una Baines, to form The Blue Orchids. While The Blue Orchids have had their stops and starts over the last 37 or so years, Bramah has seen fit to reform the band with a new line-up, a series of re-issues and a brand new album,The Once And Future Thing. And for someone who’s been around for as long as Bramah has, he still has a lot of the youthful energy that makes this a fun and interesting listen.

Opening with the very mid-’60’s/garage-y “Good Day To Live”, things are off on a very high level; catchy and driving, with the right dash of snarling punk-y vibes for good measure. “Jam Today” has a late-period Kinks feel and is equally catchy and “Motorway” definitely harkens back to Bramah’s days with The Fall (think “Bingo Master’s Breakout”) except with more structure and no punctuations of “uh” at the end of every sentence (besides, only Mark E. Smith can do that). “Rosy Hours” is a crisp, acoustic-based dirge that has atmosphere and feel, plus some very deft electric guitar figures in the middle and is a surprising high point.

“Whiskey Burn” reminds me of an even-more off-kilter Doors track crossed with The Pogues (!); “Iron Tree” is a very 1980-feeling piece – not sung but half-narrated and uptempo and “Road To Perilous” reminds me of an early solo-period Julian Cope and again, has that mid-’60’s garage feel. All in all, a very satisfying product from this latest incarnation of Blue Orchids.

While there will be some inevitable moments and comparisons to the old Fall sound and some of Bramah’s vocal inflections, this is an immensely pleasurable and enjoyable album that says “welcome back” to a band that’s never received their day in the sun. Perhaps now Blue Orchids are the future thing.
