The Gordons - 1st Album + Future Shock EP (1981)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Gordons formed in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1980 and were comprised of Alister Parker (Guitar/Vocals),John Halvorsen (Bass) and Brent McLachlan (Drums). With a sound both edgy post-Punk and semi-industrial, they toured and recorded throughout 1980, and in October released their first single "Future Shock". In late 1981, they recorded their first album The Gordons, which was voted album of 1981 in music magazine Ripitup, and subsequently split up. In late 1983, though, they re-emerged with Alister Parker replaced by new singer/guitarist Vince Pinker, and released their second album "Volume Two" in 1984. From late 1984 to 1986, the original line-up of The Gordons reformed and began recording material, which they later refused to release.

During this late period, John Halvorsen joined the Skeptics, while in 1986, Alister Parker formed a new band initially called Nelsh Bailter Space. Halvorsen joined the now truncated Bailter Space in 1987, and in 1989, the original Gordans lineup was reunited when Brent McLachlan also joined the band.

In 2013 The Gordons' debut was named a New Zealand Classic album at the annual Taite Awards.

Leaving Trains - Well down blue higway (1984)

The Leaving Trains were an American indie rock/post-punk band from Los Angeles, California. The Leaving Trains were founded in 1980 by Falling James Moreland, a frontman who became known for his chaotic performances and penchant for cross-dressing. Falling James had previously been a member of punk rock bands The Mongrels and The Downers before assembling the group with guitarist Manfred Hofer, bassist Tom Hofer, keyboardist Sylvia Juncosa and drummer Hillary Laddin. They played locally for three years before releasing their first album, Well Down Blue Highway, in 1984.

Bram Tchaikovsky - Strange man, changed man (1979)

He first came to prominence as a member of UK punk / pub rock band, The Motors, whom he joined in 1977. After he left them, he led an eponymous power pop band, with Micky Broadbent (bass, keyboards) and Keith Boyce (drums). The group scored a US Top 40 hit single in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979, with "Girl Of My Dreams". In the Netherlands "Sarah Smiles" was a minor hit, reaching number 33 in February 1979. Nick Garvey and Denis Forbes were also involved in later band line-ups. After disappointing sales, the band split up in 1981 and Tchaikovsky left the music industry.

Mad Dog - 617 (1977)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Recorded between 1974 and 1976, Mad Dog 617 with it's bleak minimalistic pre-punk feel, will blow away all fans of mid 70s heavy rock crunch! From the distorto guitars and frantic drums, to the trippy  headless titty creatures on the cover. Album which slipped through the cracks in 1977 has finally arrived on CD and will blow your minds!!!

Church - Of Skins And Heart - 1981

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

On their debut, Of Skin and Heart, the Church play straightforward pop/rock firmly rooted in new wave, though owing no small debt to '60s pop. Edgier and more direct than their later work, it also ranks among their finest for that very reason. None of the excesses and ambitions that would sometimes get out of hand on later releases are present, though much of the band's basic formula was laid down --Steve Kilbey's cool, detached vocals and slightly surrealistic lyrics combined with some outstanding pop hooks, nice harmonies, and layers of ringing guitar. The classic "Unguarded Moment" (arguably one of the greatest singles of the '80s) overshadows much of the material on the album, but there is really no shortage of great songs here. [The album was originally released in the U.S. as The Church with some tracks dropped in favor of three tracks from singles released around the same time. In 1988, Arista released Of Skin and Heart on CD in its original form with the added tracks from The Church tacked onto the end.]

Black Randy and the Metrosquad - Pass the Dust, I Think I'm Bowie (1979)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Black Randy and the Metrosquad was a punk rock and Synth act from the late 1970s and early 1980s in the Los Angeles punk scene. They gained notoriety not only for their surreal and smutty sense of humour, but also for their amalgamation of proto-punk, 1970s porn, pop, and avant-garde music.

They released many vinyl singles and cassette tapes from 1977 onwards which were later compiled an album called, Pass the Dust, I Think I'm Bowie, which had sophisticated and even innovative musical arrangements that had more in common with post-punk than hardcore bands like Black Flag. This album led to the band being the most represented act on Dangerhouse Records, the label established by Brown and Garrett. This was the label's only album release, though this was not due to nepotism, but rather to bands with major-label aspirations worrying that being associated with Black Randy's offensive songs could jeopardize their chances of being signed.

The Witch - Lazy Bones (1975)

Another out-of-nowhere African 70s rock discovery. Completely unknown band from Zambia, privately pressed on a small local label, this five-piece electric band plays a strong electric African underground style.
Witch mixed fuzz psych-rock with hard rock drive, punk energy and african rythms.

Savage Republic - Ceremonial (1985)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Savage Republic is one of the few great post-punk bands of the 80s still releasing quality material, although they've yet to top 1985's Ceremonial. In the beginning their work was typical harsh sounding post-punk with an industrial hint and strange chanted lyrics being their gimmick or spin on that style, but as they went on that industrial side grew to be more than a hint as they explored the unique instrumental drone for which they became known. Over the eight tracks on this album - some releases have nine, including the track "Valetta" from the Trudge EP, but this one doesn't because I'm bad with computers - Savage Republic show off both the hypnotic drone of later releases and the post-punk jams in the vein of New Order or The Pop Group that made up their early work in a combination not matched since. The whole thing is great but the tracks Andelusia, Walking Backwards, and, one of my all time favourite songs, Dionysius, are the most memorable. Fun and fast songs like those have a broad appeal to fans of more pop-ish or dance-y music and to anyone into noise, drone, and industrial.

Savage Republic - Tragic Figures (1982)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Savage Republic it's industrial and experimental represent Swans style of post-punk.
This is really their most atypical full-length studio album, emphasizing harsh, grating vocals and instrumental drones to a greater degree than anything else in their catalog. The throbbing percussion, though, would continue to be an element in everything they did, and quasi-Middle Eastern melodic motifs begin to assert themselves at times. Be aware that this, like all of Savage Republic's work, is not a collection of "songs" in the conventional rock sense, although many have vocals; it's more like a collection of "pieces" designed to establish moods and textures. The album is also distinguished by its exotic packaging, lettered entirely in Arabic script. The CD adds seven bonus tracks, including everything from their out-of-print 7" releases from 1983 and 1984.

Clan of Xymox - Medusa (1986)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Medusa, second album, was seen as probably the Clan of Xymox's career high point.

Sounds Magazine described Medusa as an "overriding achievement... every track sounds like the finale to a brooding epic overture" and "at their flimsiest they sound like Visage; when they're good they blend Kraftwerk with Joy Division; in their prime passages they brush with a sexy breathlessness... that is pure, poignant, unadulterated Xymox".

Clan Of Xymox - Clan Of Xymox (1985)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Debut album of Netherlands gotic/darkwave/new wave/synth band released in 1985 on the 4AD label.

The album drew comparisons to Joy Division and The Cure and created a buzz in the clubs as well as inhabited the arthouse scene.

Melody Maker in 1985 pronounced the debut 'a nervous and brilliant record' from 'guitar-splayed firefields of Cry In The Wind and Stumble and Fall, and thrill(!) to the system clearing, bass bloodied 7th Time... The range and depth of this mysterious record do not exclude arrogant electro dance anthems like Stranger and A Day ; nor do Xymox avoid sentimentality as on No Human Can Drown '.

The Lounge Lizards - The Lounge Lizards (1981)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The self-titled debut album from The Lounge Lizards is a demented tongue-in-cheek take on jazz, played with a punk attitude. If you just read the word 'jazz', and have been scared off by the thought of 7 minute drum solos and clichéd love lyrics please don't go; this not your usual jazz band. What you will hear is sleazy swing, noise, some funk and a ballad called 'Ballad', all delivered in a chaotic and manic fashion.

X is an Australian punk band from Sydney. Their debut record, "Aspirations", produced by Lobby Lloyde (Purple Hearts, Coloured Balls, Rose Tattoo - with Ian Rilen, X's guitarist).
Raw and energetic just the way good punk should be these guys were right up there with The Saints and there other contemporaries. Brilliant edgy punk, It's easy to see why this one made it into the "100 Best Australian Albums" book.

Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage Romeos (1984) [Deluxe Edt., Remastered and Expanded]

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Stoneage Romeos was iconic Australian rock group Hoodoo Gurus' first album (released 1984) and saw them receive record sales to complement their already strong reputation for live performances. Hoodoo Gurus founders were from Perth protopunk and punk bands: Dave Faulkner (guitars) and James Baker (drums) of The Victims; while Baker had been with Roddy Radalj (aka Roddy Ray'Da) (guitars) in The Scientists. The fourth founding member, Kimble Rendall (guitars) was formerly in Sydney punk rockers XL Capris.

The album name is from a Three Stooges short film. With radio and television support for their third single "My Girl" (1983) (complete with a film clip about a greyhound of the same name), the band's following grew. The album's other singles were - "Leilani" (1982), "Tojo" (1983), and "I Want You Back" (1984). Later in July 1985 they took the honours in the 'Best Debut Album' category at the 1984 Countdown Awards.
