Chromagain - Any Colour You Like (1985)

Minimal Electro Wave band Chromagain, hailing from Torino, Italy.

Their ultra rare and sought-after Mini-LP “Any Colour You Like” from 1985 (originally released for the cult italian wave label Supporti Fonografici, home of Weimar Gesang).

Electronic wave, with some debt to New Order's ‘Movement’ and ‘Power, Corruption & Lies’, but also highly original, the tracks are assembling an out of the blue mix between dark and mournful ballads and outbursts of joy for cutting-edge dancefloors.

Surely a true classic and not be missed!

Monuments - Age (1984)

Monuments were founded in January 1981 in Turin, Italy. The band emerged from the ashes of the new wave band Tecknospray (1978–81), where the founding members played side by side as guitarist/keyboardist and bassist/keyboardist. In the new line-up Mauro Tavella (synthesizer and programs) and Andrea Costa (synthesizer and vocals) immediately decided to dedicate themselves exclusively to electro - music. Their aim was to blend traditional pop melodies with the latest synthesized sounds.

Aerial FX — Same River Twice (2010)

In the early ‘80s, a five-piece band based out of Oxford dramatically changed their sound to meld with the surging new wave movement. They adopted the name Aerial FX, releasing two singles and one full album before their abrupt disbandment in the middle of the decade. Now, 25 years later, a full album’s worth of Aerial FX music has surfaced – Same River Twice. With 12 songs that have never seen the light of day until now, Aerial FX’s commemoration will make listeners yearn for a return to the days of new wave with its unabashed upbeat mood and lyrics.

Same River Twice is a fantastic flashback to the ‘80s new wave genre, filled with poppy dance numbers, catchy grooves, and a great rock sound. Sultry, melancholy vocals trade off with light and romantic ones. From the opening track of “Hold Me” through the ending track of “Make It for You (12” Version),” Aerial FX flaunts the genre outstandingly. Guitars collide with synth, from “Heatwave” to “Where Is Tomorrow” to “I See Changes.” However, while the music is very nostalgic and very enjoyable, this is by no means an outstanding album. It fits the mold of the genre for the time, doing all the right things in all the right places, but Aerial FX doesn’t jump out the way that artists such as New Order or Joy Division did. In fact, Aerial FX sounds very reminiscent of these bands and more, making them more of a mirror for the time.

Same River Twice is a solid album and a great reminder of 25 years ago. However, it is a repeat journey, as the album title implies, down the same river as many other bands. Aerial FX is a way to reminisce on the good old days as much as possible.

Joe Strummer – Joe Strummer 001 (2018)

A new box set devoted to the solo work of The Clash frontman, who passed in 2002. Subscribers of Apple Music and Spotify can stream select songs from the project below.

The expansive box set encompasses Strummer’s recordings with the 101ers and The Mescaleros, as well as his soundtrack work. Much of the curation comes via his widow, Luce, who’s been archiving the remains of his writings and tapes. Joining her was artist Robert Gordon McHarg III, who previously worked on The Clash’s Sound System box set. All the tracks were restored and mastered by Grammy winner Peter J. Moore. Previously, we’ve heard “London is Burning”, an alternate take of “Burnin’ Street” off his final Mescaleros album Streetcore, and “Rose of Erin”, a 1993 song from the film When Pigs Fly.

“The themes of these songs resonate. I kept thinking, ‘Wow, he was so ahead of his times, but also current, and aware of the past at the same time,” McHarg III of Strummer in an interview with Rock Cellar. “It’s almost like past, present and future is all rolled up into one in everything he touched.”

The box set will be available in a number of formats, including a limited edition deluxe box set that will feature vinyl pressings, a 7-inch vinyl single, a cassette, an art print, collectibles, and an accompanying book featuring rare, unpublished photographs, memorabilia, reviews, and technical notes. “The idea behind the book is that it’s an A4 notebook done as if Joe had designed it himself, telling his story,” McHarg III said in a press release.

Throbbing Gristle - Mission Of Dead Souls (2018)

The final performance of Throbbing Gristle before their initial breakup, at the Kezar Pavillion, San Francisco on 29 May 1981.

‘Mission of Dead Souls’ documents the notorious final performance of Throbbing Gristle in their original incarnation (1975-1981). Recorded at Kezar Pavillion, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco on 29th May, 1981 and unavailable on vinyl since the early ‘90s, it’s now back on wax with a new inner sleeve including photos and a passage of text by Jon Savage

Recorded by Monte Cazzaza, long a satellite member of the band, ‘Mission of Souls’ captures the band in a period of broken relationships and internecine collapse, which definitely only adds to its historical weight as a document of the late 20th C’s most important band in its death throes.

Counting Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter and Peter "Sleazy” Christopherson on stage, the infamous four generate a dense black energy in ten parts, culminating in killer and now classic takes on ‘Spirits Flying’, a possessed version of ‘Persuasion U.S.A.’, and a trampling curtain call with ‘Discipline (Reprise)’.

Tv Smith - Land Of The Overdose (2018)

Punk legend TV SMITH to release new album ’Land Of The Overdose‘

Described as “one of the most important political songwriters in the U.K” TV Smith’s new studio album “Land Of The Overdose” will be released by JKP, the label of German outfit Die Toten Hosen on September 14, 2018.

TV Smith comments:

“It‘s been a long journey from 1977. I used to think that punk rock was a one-off protest movement, but sadly now in 2018 there is even more to protest about. The punk spirit lives on. In “Land Of The Overdose” I‘ve tried to sum up everything I feel about what‘s wrong with the world and what we can do about it. The only compensation for me about the awful state we find ourselves in is that it‘s inspired me to come up with some of the best songs I‘ve ever written. I hope this album sends out a positive message that if we recognise the problems in the world things can start to change for the better, and that music can be a force for the good.”

Glen Matlock – Good To Go (2018)

Former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock recruited old friends Earl Slick – David Bowie’s guitarist – and Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats for his solo album Good to Go, which will be released on Aug. 24.

“It’s a very simple kind of album,” Matlock told Rolling Stone in a new interview. “You could call it ‘loud skiffle.’ I was inspired to make it after seeing Bob Dylan at the Royal Albert Hall a few years back. I’m no big fan of his, [but] the band was fantastic. I said to myself, ‘I want to do something like that.'”

In a press release, Matlock explained how Slick had brought a feel to the track “Speak Too Soon” that he believed Bowie would have been proud of. “It’s quite a departure for me. The basic chord structure is like ‘Spanish Harlem’ or ‘Stand by Me,’ juxtaposed with Earl’s Ebow guitar which is like something from Bowie’s ‘Heroes.’ The sustained sound in the background behind the guitar riff was Earl; it’s pretty off the wall. I said let’s go with it and he built it up.”

Matlock added that “it’s well known I like the Faces and a bit of Bob Dylan, and it’s all incorporated in there somewhere. What changes is the lyric. In the words of [John] Lennon, I’m writing for the kids that have grown up with me. ... When it comes to music, I like some actual music in the music. … It’s quite personal, but there are some tongue-in-cheek funny bits in it. I didn’t set out to write a Sex Pistols album and fail miserably.”

Holy Toy - Warszawa (1982) + Panzer and Rabbits (1984)

Experimental industrial/darkwave/post-punk brilliance. I know virtually nothing about this band -- Discogs tells me that they are Norwegian and Polish -- but having heard their first three records, I can tell you that they are cool as shit, and that Panzer and Rabbits is the best of what I've heard.

Lost Cherrees - All Part of Growing Up (1984)

British anarcho-punk band the Lost Cherrees' 1985 debut album All part of growing up. The Lost Cherrees were formed in 1979 by Steve Battershill, Dave Greaves, and Siân Jeffreys. After some rehearsals, they recorded and released a six-track demo tape called "The worst demo ever recorded," a split with the band Warning. They played some gigs, and then Dave Greaves left the band and Andy Rolfe took his place as guitarist; Battershill switched to bass and a new drummer, Nuts, joined the band as well. This lineup recorded a second demo in 1982, with some tracks also included on a split release with Subhumans. In 1983 the band started to play lots of gigs and began working with Dave Floyd and Riot/Clone, and out of this relationship came their first offer for a proper release. The 7" No Fighting, No War, No Trouble, No More was released in late 1983, and John Peelgave the record frequent airtime. The band played gigs with the likes of Conflict and Subhumans all over England and recorded a second 7", A Man's Duty, A Woman's Place, which was released on Colin Jerwood's label Mortarhate Records in 1984. During this time, Lost Cherrees played gigs with Rudimentary Peni, Flux of Pink Indians, Dirt, Icons of Filth, Partisans, Rubella Ballet and many others. One of these gigs ended in a riot, and the Special Patrol Group was called in -- the incident was reported in the next day's national press. In this period Gail Thibert joined the band on keyboards and Beverly Cook-Abbott joined as a second vocalist, rounding out a seven-person lineup with which the band played lots of gigs. In 1984, the Lost Cherrees entered Ariwa Studio in Brixton to record a 16-track album engineered by the legendary Mad Professor and Patrick Donegan. All part of growing up, the band's first album, was released on Fight Back Records (through Conflict and Mortarhate) in 1985. Sometime between its recording and release, Jeffreys left to join Joseph Porter's Blyth Power collective. All part of growing up is a classic album on which the band explode their anarcho-punk with some post-punk and reggae moments, highly influenced by Mad Professor and The Ruts.

Mourning Noise - Dawn of the Dead 7''EP (1982)

Mourning Noise was an American horror- and hardcore punk band from Lodi, New Jersey, notable for drummer Steve Zing. Active around the time of the Misfits, Mourning Noise were strongly influenced by the Misfits as drummer Steve Zing lived very close to Jerry Only and Doyle's house and Steve went to high school with Doyle. Their music was typically fast and melodic. Mourning Noise released only a small amount of material, typically as 7" singles, apart from the 1998 collection album Death Trip Delivery. Steve later went on to play for Samhain, Son of Sam, The Undead, Chyna, Doomtree, and later, Danzig.

Samhain guitarist Damien was briefly a member of the band.

100 Flowers ‎– 100 Years Of Pulchritude (1990, compilation)

For those who don't know, Los Angeles' 100 Flowers were originally known as the Urinals. As the Urinals they released three 7 inches on their own Happy Squid label, all of which are justifiably revered by punk record collectors. For a complete rundown of Urinals' activities do check out the still-in-print-for-now Negative Capability collection. Deciding to ditch the silly/risque name and get serious they became 100 Flowers (who, for the record, featured the exact same lineup as the Urinals.) Under this moniker the band released their first and only full-length album as well as a single and EP. They were sometimes called an American counterpart to Wire, who took a similar path from minimalist bashing to angular cool. They have also been cited as an influence on the Minutemen, who covered the Urinals' classic "Ack Ack Ack Ack." On the DVD of the Minutemen documentary We Jam Econo, one can even see footage on of D.Boon giddily pogoing during 100 Flowers' final performance and carrying one of their members through the crowd after the show, as if celebrating a championship win. These references are helpful but as is often the case with a band this unique, they don't really tell the whole story. Simply put, 100 Flowers' recorded output is among the finest examples of American post-punk, holding their own against not only the Minutemen, but also Mission of Burma, the Feelies, the Embarrassment, Pylon, etc.

Nearly all of 100 Flowers discography was collected on the now out-of-print 100 Years of Pulchritude CD: the self-titled album, the Drawing Fire EP, the "Presence of Mind" 7" and a handful of compilation and unreleased cuts. Happy Squid's website stated that this collection was due come back in print in early 2008 but since it's yet to materialize, here it is for your listening pleasure. I also recommend you take a look at this post on the quite excellent Detailed Twang blog, which not only offers better written biography and exegeses but also a pair of 100 Flowers songs that were not included on this compilation. And don't forget the Urinals collection, Negative Capability, well worth your time and money.

The Teardrops - Final Vinyl (1980)

The Teardrops were a very short lived New Wave band that formed in Manchester, England in 1978. The band was assembled by Steve Garvey, who was at the time playing bass in another Manchester based band Buzzcocks. The band initially consisted of Steve Garvey (bass/vocals), Trevor Wain (guitar/vocals), John Key (guitar/vocals), Dave Brisbane (guitar), and John Donelly on drums. With this line up, a four song EP was recorded and released in 1978 by Bent Records entitled In and Out of Fashion. Shortly after the release of this EP, the line up of the band changed to include Tony Friel and Karl Burns, both were previously in the band The Fall. Another EP was released in the same year titled Leave Me No Choice that had the exact same tracklisting as the In and Out of Fashion EP. It seems that the EP was re-recorded with the new band members.

In 1979, a single was released titled Seeing Double. This 7 inch single may or may not have Steve Garvey on it. According to the Buzzcocks discography he does play on it, but it is believed that he did not participate on this single. By 1980, the band had almost run its course. With a few new members (Helen Barbrook, Trev Wain, and Dave Price) the band recorded and released its only full length album that was titled Final Vinyl. Released in January of 1980, the album featured some re-recordings of previous Teardrops songs "Teardrops and Heartaches", was now known as "Everything's O.K" it was originally a B-side on the Seeing Double single. "Teenage Vice" was also on this album, it was previously on the In and Out of Fashion EP and the Leave No Choice EP. The music on this album is for the most part experimental. There are elements of 70s Punk and New Wave on Final Vinyl, at times sounding like a mix between Buzzcocks and The Fall. The band essentially dissolved by 1981. In 1980 a compilation featuring Manchester bands called Identity Parade was released, it featured a song by The Teardrops called "Colours". A very short lived band emerged following The Teardrops called Bok Bok. They released one single in 1980 called Come Back To Me.

Spare Change - Lonely Suits (1979)

Spare Change allegedly formed, at least in concept, among Adelaide ex-pats in Amsterdam. Back in Adelaide, the band coalesced in 1973 as a pre-punk powerpop unit, as much in thrall to the MC5 and the Flamin' Groovies as the art rock of Sparks, songs by all of which featured in the band's early repertoire. The initial line-up included John Dowler (vocals), Chris Langman (guitar), Bob Kretschmer (guitar), Tony Murray (keyboards), and John Wilkenson (drums). Wilkenson was soon replaced by Graeme Perry, and this would remain the definitive Spare Change line-up. After a solid couple of years playing Adelaide pubs, Spare Change relocated to Melbourne in early 1975, becoming a fixture of the Carlton scene. There, the band recorded The Big Beat, penned by Murray, which was issued as a single at the tail end of 1976 (b/w Classified Ad, Champagne CHS 601). Aided and abetted by Henry Vyhnal, the band continued recording until March 1977 with the intention of an LP release, but broke up before that eventuated. The posthumous Lonely Suits LP (Cleopatra CLP 202) was eventually released in late 1979, and included both sides of the earlier 45.

In its first incarnation, The Big Beat presents as infectious, melody-laden pre-punk powerpop, but compared with Spare Change's influences it sure does sound like it has a stick up its arse. Dave Laing described the overall effect as "pretentious and stilted"; we hear a catchy and relatively simple song cluttered by compositional tricks, highlighted by the series of brazen truck driver's gear changes which bookend each chorus. Purists may say that semitone modulation around the chorus isn't a true gearstick workout, but they probably haven't heard The Big Beat's gears crunch as its key pivots from A to B-flat and back again. Add to the equation some very literal drumming which only picks up when the chorus kicks in ("The Big Beat comes on loud and strong..."), and someone is guilty of over-thinking things a touch. Usually that someone is us, but here the evidence points closer to home.

Alternate Learning - ALRN (7''EP, 1979) + Painted Windows (LP, 1981)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I had a request for these two records that was simply too good to refuse, even if I don't possess physical copies of either.  If you have any awareness whatsoever as to what Alternate Learning (ALRN for short) were about, you likely know they were the predecessor to the late Scott Miller's more renown mid-80s combo, Game Theory.  I'm not privy to the impetus of the band's moniker, but it's safe to say that if you wish to have "alternate facts" it's only logical that "alternate learning" has to come first, no?  And speaking of all things logical, their 1981 full length Painted Windows was a fittingly stylistic precursor to the first GT wax, Blaze of Glory.  Stunning, inspired slices of vaguely skewed collegiate juvenilia entailing the likes of "The New You" and "Beach State Rocking" make Painted... almost as rewarding an any given Theory offering.  You'll no doubt suss out a more pronounced emphasis on synthesizers cropping up on ALRN tunes stacked up to GT, but in terms of song arrangements, Miller's formula was baked into the cake when this dandy little LP was gestated way back when.

The four song ALRN ep was dropped two years prior to Painted Windows, wielding a considerably more nascent, not to mention lo-fi approach.  An adolescent surge of punky guitars propels "What's the Matter" in a manner that Miller never pursued in Game Theory, but even this early in the game (pun partially intended) "When She's Alone" foreshadows his burgeoning pop acumen, and is in all ways a keeper.  Certain copies of this 7" ep were accompanied with a spate of colorful inserts.

Special thanks to whomever ripped these scarce slabs of wax and provided the artwork. The 2014 reissue of the aforementioned debut Game Theory LP, Blaze of Glory includes a total of four songs from both ALRN records as bonus material in sterling CD quality.  Don't cheat yourself, treat yourself here.

Jagatara was a Japanese band centered on Edo Akemi. They are renowned for their unique sound, which has been described as a mixture of rock, especially punk, funk and reggae.

The band formed in March, 1979, and released their first album 'Nanban Torai' 「南蛮渡来」in 1982. Their multi-musical approach resulted in collaborations with differing artists from around the world, such as Mute Beat, John Zorn, and Mahotella Queens. On January 27, 1990, Edo died, and the band broke up shortly after. Since that time there has been an annual concert held by the Shinjuku loft venue in honour of the band, featuring numerous guest musicians performing Jagatara songs.

The Ex ‎– 27 Passports (2018)

a0867370351_10

Dutch band The Ex formed in 1979 and were initially known as an anarcho-punk band. Since, they have released over 20 full-length albums of musical experiments and numerous collaborations blending punk and free jazz with styles of folk music from all over the world. "We always start from zero when we make a new album. We enter the rehearsal room with a few loose ideas, a riff or a beat and see what happens. There is always the risk that it doesn't work out. That risk is part of our music and of our lives." - The Ex. With the unmistakable "Ex energy". the three-pronged guitar approach is still as exciting as ever, with the guitars of Andy Moor, Terrie Hessels and Arnold de Boer creating tense, interlocking webs of connections, and drummer Katherina Bornefeld pushing the band with dancing, hypnotic patterns. There are some remnants of their African adventures (with Ethiopian legend Getatchew Mekuria) , but most of all, this is a return to the power of The Ex as a unit that effortlessly juggles noisy/disjointed guitar parts, trance-like grooves, defiant chanting and a relentless, infectious drive.

KSMB - Rika Barn Leka Bäst (1981)

On their second album "Rika Barn Leka Bast" (transl. Rich Feather Flock Together) KSMB left the punk in part on this record, I mean, it's still there, but this album is very different from their brilliant debut album Aktion. It is widely regarded as the worst of KSMB's only three albums and was also a step away from pure punk (test for comparison this small 7'' collection). One track (Blatt & Guld), for example, included a brass ensemble. That first sounds scary and sometimes I think the record is extremely poppy but if I longer to this album so I think it has been criticized unfairly pejorative. Well, today thirty years later, we look on it with different ears and I wish there were more bands playing this kind of music. So I mean this is a cool powerpop/punk album and I think it will convince you. Would be interesting to know what you think.

KSMB - Aktion (1980)

Few bands have influenced me like KSMB from Skärholmen, a suburb South of Stockholm. As I kid some older boys played it at school and it was the first hard music I ever heard. One of the boys had a stud-jacket with the text (translated) “Don’t beleive you can escape death by stop living”, which comes from the insert of this record. A record that blew me away. I got a copy quickly and it’s one of the few records I actually have worn out. Worn out, not by being damaged at some party – just worn out after being played a lot. Here in Sweden Ebba Grön common punk knowledge and the second most known band is for sure KSMB. I will not spend any time on comparison however.

The embryo of the band could be found as early as 1977 with 14! members but the line-up on this LP (recorded in late 1979) was Alonzo (vox), Steppan (vox), Johnnny Sylvan (guitar), Mats Nilsson (bass) and Johan Johansson (drums). The name is an acronym for Kurt-Sunes with Bertits a joke with all the strange dance-music bands that toured in Sweden at the same time. KSMB played at a lot of youth centers which could be found all over Sweden. This record is their debut album (they appeared on a compilation with Incent Brothers and Travlota Kids before this. A single for this record was also released). It an awesome record and having two singers was quite unusual. They did not define themself as a punk band, rather saying they played vrålrock (translation scream-rock). With the speedy song, spot on lyrics and incredible energy I would (I know many might disagree) say they were a kind of proto-hardcore band.

There are 15 songs on this release and if it did not happen to be some crappy slow songs (Ett ben / Bara Ett Minne / Pf) I would give this record 11 points out of maximum 10 point but I have to rate it 10 due to this. The record starts with the opening track Tidens Tempo with the introduction lyrics (translated) “Why to you think think we sound as we do – why do you think we do what we do” and KSMB just hammer you with great songs. On the third track Adolf  you can hear how both vocalist complementing each other. Awesome. Another cool thing is that the band played at the prison “Hall” on x-mas in 1980 which I think honor them.

I don’t know how many presses that was done of this record. The first press however have 3-panel fold-out lyric insert (pictured) and yellow labels. For any fans of Scandi punk this record is for sure a must have. That’s valid for fans of the first wave of hardcore.

UNNATURAL AXE - Is Gonna Kick Your Ass 1978-1988

Awesome punk band from Boston and I quote you a review from an expert of the Boston punk scene: "It is 1977. A scruffy neighborhood of Boston sprouts a band of naive working-class kids who think they can shake up the world with their personal take on the punk rock experience. Not content, or possibly even competent enough, to be another Jam clone or a Clash clone, Unnatural Axe bash out their own brand of two-chord and three-chord rock, and crank it up extra high. Throughout 1978 and 1979 the Axe were playing regularly in New York, and at Cantone's, the Rat, and the Space in Boston as the opening act for the "big" UK and US new wave acts of the time. Their strangest billing must have been opening for The Police at the Rat in Kenmore Square. It is truly unfortunate that Sting squandered this "turning point" opportunity to learn the essentials of punk rock from Boston's finest. Sting's only question of the Axe vocalist: "Did you poop?" But such is the fate for the greatest moments of brilliance of our times: few people recognize it. The big club owners didn't see it and the major record labels didn't hear it. After two short years, the Axe packed it in. As a result, the Unnatural Axe discography is small, but what recordings do exist provide the documented proof that the Axe were, and shall always remain, the most important punk band Boston will ever call its own." (Monsieur Michel Bastarache) - Enough words, time for music so let's go boys!

TORPEDO MOSKAU - Malenkaja Rabota (1984)

TORPEDO MOSKAU were formed by former members of SLIME, TARGETS & NAPALM and their first apppear with two songs on the compilation Keine Experimente II which was released as well on Weird System, including famous bands such as EA80, Neurotic Arseholes, CHAOS-Z or CRETINS, and a song on the "Life Is A Joke Vol.2" compilation (international bands). The tunes by Torpedo Moskau reminds a little of Wipers and with their psycho-demanding lyrics the four Hamburgs drive at the usual beer & anarchy lyrics of many German-punk bands of the 80s by far. When i first heard the LP, it has me equally excited and for me a milestone in German punk culture.

The Slickee Boys - Separated Vegetables (1977)

Separated Vegetables is the first full-length album by Washington, D.C.'s Slickee Boys. Self-released on guitarist Kim Kane's Dacoitlabel (catalog number 1001), it was pressed in an edition of 100 copies. As well as songs written by the band, it includes cover versionsof songs originally by Overkill (an early D.C. punk band, not the heavy metal band of the same name), Flamin' Groovies, the Road Runners, Johnny Smith, Country Joe and the Fish, the Small Faces, Chuck Berry, and the Hangmen (whose song, "What a Girl Can't Do", the Slickee's had already released on their debut record, 1976's Hot and Cool EP. A mix of studio and live recordings, the album includes a number of tracks taped in front of an appreciative audience at D.C. punk dive the Keg.

400 Blows - ...If I Kissed Her I'd Have To Kill Her First (1984) + Look (1986)

400 Blows were a British industrial/post punk band founded in 1981.

400 Blows was formed in Croydon, South London by Edward Beer in 1981 along with two friends, Alexander Fraser and Rob. Their debut single was released on their own Concrete Productions record label in 1982. In 1983 they were signed to the Illuminated label and subsequently released an album, "...if I kissed her I'd have to kill her first..." (a quote from serial killer Edmund Kemper to his sister, who was teasing him about wanting to kiss his teacher). In 1985 they released a single, "Movin'", described by Adrian Thrills in the New Musical Express as 'a spiked reworking of the 1976 Brass Construction dance classic'. It reached 54 in the UK Singles Chart. By this time the line up was Beer, Anthony Thorpe, and Lea, formerly the female half of the duo Tom Boy. Scott Fraser continues to be a leading light in the alternative/underground music movement.

Playgroup - Epic Sound Battles Chapter 1 (1982)

cce5a245663223399a9874dd0fb5bfe5-full.jpg

Playgroup was more or less a band of the usual suspects hanging around at the studio : Bruce "Minty" Smith, Eskimo Fox, Style Scott, Sean "Hogg" Oliver, George Oban, Crucial Tony, John Waddington, Kendall Ernest, "Deadly Headley" Bennett, Tony Wraffer, Nick Plytas, Mark Coalfield, Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah are names you know from many On-U Sound records.

But this is a little different. Maybe John Waddington (ex-Pop Group, link to our 'Sons & Daughters Of The Pop Group' mission) had a strong influence on this. The Reggae and Dub elements are spiced up with more jazzy sax and Waddington's free form guitar playing. Especially "Crunch", "Shock absorber" and "Hoggs might fly" sound rather Pop Groupey. "No speed limit" is a fine example of Sherwood Dub production.

Television Personalities - Beautiful Despair (2018)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A lost album from the UK post-punk greats, recorded circa 1989, sheds light on the creative process of brilliant, troubled frontman Dan Treacy.

In his prime, Television Personalities frontman Dan Treacy was perhaps the most unconventional figure in post-punk. Indeed, the usual procedures of writing, recording and performing music seemed to bore him so much he could hardly be bothered to try. In concert, Treacy refused to write setlists or announce titles, leaving his bandmates to identify each new mystery song as he launched into it; Television Personalities rehearsals, meanwhile, were virtually nonexistent. “I remember us rehearsing once in late 1983,” Treacy’s friend and collaborator Jowe Head recalled to The Brag in 2016. “We did another one five years later, and that was about it.” So averse was Treacy to the obligatory drudgery of being a musician that it sometimes seemed as if he’d prefer to do anything else. “In fact music is probably not the right medium for me to express myself,” he confessed in an interview in the mid-’80s. “I like films and books more.”

But music was what he chose. Over more than 30 years and nearly a dozen celebrated albums, Treacy expressed his suffering with his music until the suffering overwhelmed him. (He expressed his joy and humor when he felt them, too, but the pain won out.) In the ’90s, he vanished for more than half a decade, whereabouts unknown: it would later transpire he’d been serving time on a prison barge, convicted for shoplifting. Addiction tormented him. In 2011, after a short-lived mid-aughts comeback, he disappeared again—this time owing to a blood clot in the brain that required extensive surgery. Since then, reportedly, he has been recovering under professional care in a nursing home. With not much prospect now of new music, the arrival of a lost Television Personalities album would seem to be cause for celebration—we’re getting more Dan Treacy just when we need him.

Beautiful Despair was recorded at Jowe Head’s flat at Glading Terrace in Stoke Newington over a number of sessions in 1989 and 1990, after the release of the acclaimed Privilege and before the recording of the mid-career classic Closer to God—the latter of which contains so many of these songs in more complete form that it seems more accurate to describe Beautiful Despair as a first draft of Closer to God than a proper standalone LP. It is a true “lost album” in one literal sense: Head admitted recently that he had “mislaid the tapes” from these sessions and simply happened upon them while looking for something else. But it is not as though 48 minutes’ worth of never-before-heard vintage Television Personalities material has been unearthed after all these years. Beautiful Despair is a rough sketch, and its worth extends only as far as one’s interest in such a document.

The Defects - Feed The Good Dog (2017)

‘Feed The Good Dog’ is the third studio album from Belfast punk legends The Defects since they reformed in 2010.

The Defects may still arguably be best known for the original incarnation of the band’s one and only album, the wonderful ‘Defective Breakdown’ in 1983, but the current incarnation have built a fearsome reputation of their own through incendiary live shows and the previous albums, and this one can only build on that.

‘Feed The Good Dog’ pretty much picks up from where 2015’s rather fine ’45 Minutes’ left off, so if you liked that one, you’re guaranteed to like this one.

Opener ‘Another Promise Broken’ sets the pace with a fast and furious approach, echoed in tracks like ‘The Wisdom Of Norman’, ‘Made To Break’, ‘Third Time Lucky’ and ‘Theatre Of War’, all packed full of the kind of political and social commentary you’d expect from The Defects.

Best of the bunch for me is ‘Hunter Versus Hunter’, a punchy and very catchy tune with a killer chorus that would make an ideal single if bands still did that sort of thing, and later on it’s reprised as a great slice of dub reggae in the shape of ‘Action Junkie’.

The groove-laden ‘Arch Enemy’ and ’30 Billion Dollar Swindle’ add a different, twisted rock flavour to the album, whilst the closing track ‘Brotherhood Of Death’ is another highlight for me, once again a bit more in the rock direction with some powerful riffing. It’s tracks like these that show there’s a little bit more to The Defects than just your traditional punk rock fare.

Simply put, ‘Feed The Good Dog’ is a great album from a great band.

Rik L Rik - The Lost Album (1991)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Rik L Rik's The Lost Album, originally released in 1991. The late great LA punk scene hero Rik L Rik's (F Word, Negative Trend) only solo album is a killer collection of singles, compilation tracks, live recordings, and unreleased tracks spanning punk, goth-rock, and new wave. Rik L Rik was a true original, parading around LA barefoot, living at his parents' house well into his 20s, and generally not giving a fuck in pure punk fashion. Essential for all fans of the '70s/'80s LA scene!
