The 4th Movement - The 4th Movement (1980) + The Totally (1982)

Back in the early 1970s, three brothers from Detroit, Michigan formed the pioneering proto-punk band Death, having been spiritually awakened at shows by The Who and Alice Cooper. The band were headstrong, and refused pleas from Columbia Records to change their name to something that might not frighten a mainstream audience. Sadly this resulted in a lack of previously forthcoming support, and their seven tracks never saw the light of day until Drag City released …For The Whole World To See, eventually, in 2009!

The band broke up in 1977, despondent from lack of promotion, and rightly so – the energy fizzed from those seven songs, but this was the 1970s, and the world, apparently, was not ready for a black punk trio. So they regrouped, gathered their thoughts, and in 1980, released a follow up of sorts, under the moniker The 4th Movement. Various sources describe this offering as ‘gospel rock’, but to label it merely this way would be to do the band a grave disservice.

If anything, the roughly tamed edges of the brothers’ earlier incarnation often sound closer to The Jimi Hendrix Experience than anything else, though ‘The Christ In You‘ has that lazy summertime feel of The Style Council‘s ‘Long Hot Summer‘ and there is enough variation on this eponymously titled album to prevent them being half-heartedly pigeonholed under one banner.

‘The Build Up‘ – a fantastic tune – is reminiscent of the towering blues with which the Keef Hartley Bandmade their name in the late sixties, while ‘Key To Paradise‘ is about as jangly as you can get.

Of course, any artist willing to wear their faith on their sleeve so brazenly is bound to have its fair share of detractors; even Bob Dylan befell such a fate in his much maligned ‘born again Christian’ phase. Some folk, after all, associate religion, in one way or another, with all that’s wrong in the world today, but The 4th Movement never feels over the top in that respect. It comes across merely as three brothers truly wanting to spread their love as far and wide as they possibly can, through the medium of their splendid melodies.

Of course, ultimately attempting to appeal to such a limited audience from that point onwards, the brothers never made any kind of inroads towards becoming household names, but make no mistake, these are still strong albums.

Is The 4th Movement in the same league as their work as Death? Probably not. But one thing’s for sure – the music world was and is a better place with them in it.

Zwischenfall - Gestern Und Heute (compilation,1995)

Here’s a CD compilation of German new wave/minimal band Zwischenfall, who wrote some of the most underrated tracks of the ’80s. Several of the cuts on this collection are dance floor destroyers, especially “Sandy Eyes” (more of an italo cut), “Sacred Time,” “Atemlos,” and two versions of “Flucht.”

Lè Travo ‎– Erring And Errant (1985)

Lè Travo is the brainchild of Patrick Bollen from Tienen, Belgium. As a teenager in the early 1980s, Patrick would visit "DeAtelier", the infamous coldwave/gothic club in Leuven. He would be inspired by Joy Division and other Factory releases, The Danse Society and Cocteau Twins. He gathered a some session musicians and a female backup vocalist. They recorded with live drums, TR-808 drum machine, Roland JX3P synthesizer, electric guitar and bass. Eventually Patrick bought a Greengate DE-3 sampler, using the brains of an Apple 2E with a keyboard bolted onto it. He crafted loops made from a deconstructed upright piano, hitting the strings directly with a drum stick. Lè Travo made their first appearance on a split LP with Fred A in 1984. "Erring and Errant" is their debut 7 song LP originally released in 1985. For the reissue 3 bonus songs from the split LP have been added. The songs are coldwave in the vein of Weimar Gesang, Opera Multi Steel, and Clan of Xymox. Guitar, bass and sample interplay with piano and synthesizers with dark and forbidding crescendos in the fast numbers, and elegaic melancholy in the slow tracks. The vocals are delivered with a sense of urgency, while the lyrics are inspired by avant-garde movements such as futurism and constructivism, as well as science fiction and existentialism. All songs have been transferred from the original reel to reels and carefully remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy jacket with original artwork as well as a fold-out poster with lyrics and photos. Lè Travo is derived from French word "les travaux", which means : the works, a fitting name for this compilation of lost music from the Belgian underground.

Television Personalities – Some Kind Of Happening Singles 1978-1989 (2019)

There have been a few compilations of the Television Personalities' singles and EPs, but it wasn't until the pair of sets put out by Fire Records in 2019 that they were presented in chronological order with the requisite rarities. Both Some Kind of Trip: Singles 1990-1994 and this collection, Some Kind of Happening: Singles 1978-1989, provide a service that's on par with the vital utilities like gas and water. Like those essentials, the songs and very particular world view of Dan Treacy are an absolutely necessary part of everyday life for fans of indie pop. Especially indie pop that is unsparing, spiky, endlessly melodic, and weird as a duck, because the TVPs are all those things and more.

This set traces the non-LP history of the band from their punky beginnings of hand-folded sleeves and John Peel endorsements to crashing mod revival and ultra-twee neo-psychedelia -- right up to the point where the band (and Treacy) seemed like maybe they had burned out for good. It collects their late-'70s singles for Rough Trade that made their name as shambling, witty, and sharp commenters on the scene. Songs like "Part Time Punks" and "Where's Bill Grundy Now" skewered the U.K. scene and deconstructed punk while creating their own little space where anything could happen. From there the band started incorporating '60s sounds into their approach. The lo-fi freakbeat "Smashing Time" is a brilliant early example of Treacy taking a familiar sound and turning it into something gloriously personal and strange, as is "King and Country," which cheekily borrows the guitar solo from "8 Miles High." They also delved deeply into oddball psychedelia on "I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives"; wrote smashing mod tunes like "And Don't the Kids Just Love It"; and as the decade progressed, they added some noisy muscle to their sound. 1986's "How I Learnt to Love the Bomb" has a creeping power and guitars that fill the room instead of scraping at the edges, and the lovely arrangement and aching melody of "Now You're Just Being Ridiculous" shows that Treacy's skill as a craftsman was only growing even as his personal life and the band were on the verge of collapse.

Adding to the officially released singles that make up the bulk of the collection, some nice rarities were added like the crash pop double shot of "Painting by Numbers" and "Lichtenstein Girl," recorded under the name the Gifted Children in 1981; a 1982 flexi disc released by Creation where the band does a credible cover of "Biff Bang Pow"; two singles that were slated to be released on Treacy's Dreamworld label in the mid-'80s but were shelved (not for quality issues!); and a rare single released on the Caff label in 1989. The singles plus the rarities make for a thrilling collection of music that works as a stand-alone confirmation of Dan Treacy's unrelenting genius or, when paired with the brilliant albums the band released at the same time, fits the pieces of the TVP puzzle together quite nicely.

D.O.A. - 1978 (2019)

1978 is a 21 track collection of never released demos, rare tracks and early singles from Canada's punk pioneers. Joey Shithead went deep into the Sudden Death vault and came up with some super exciting and raw punk rock. The album title and art concept is spike haired nod of the head to that early, dynamic era of D.O.A. and to the seven great former members of D.O.A., who have passed on. Their spirit and talent played a huge role into launching the band into worldwide prominence. The two constants on the album are Joey Shithead and Chuck Biscuits who play on every track. From the start of 1978 you are drawn in by their wild, I don't give a shit approach to punk rock. Now some 40 years later you can hear it all, starting with the never seen light of day demo version of The Enemy. This demo has a different set of lyrics that speaks to fighting Nazis - strange, what is old is new and vital again. There's a ton of exciting tracks that range from the never heard before: Bored and Suicidal, The Mutant, No God No War, Rip Dis Joint, No Way Out and Rent-A-Riot to classic early singles like Fucked Up Ronnie, Disco Sucks, World War3, The Prisoner and Thirteen. You also get demo versions of America the Beautiful and Liar for Hire with Biscuits drumming, which are wildly different than the classic versions you hear on War on 45. On 1978 you hear the origins of hardcore and you get a full blast of D.O.A's politics and raucous humour.

La Peste - Better Off La Peste (1977-78)

Some pretty classic stuff on here, circa 1977-78. La Peste were legendary in Boston and "Better
Off Dead" cemented their status across the universe forever. This compilation is well done as well, the only weird part is in the Johnny Angel liner notes where he fantasizes that he was the band's first choice to replace Peter Dayton in 1979. Dude, that "angel dust" you're smoking (no relation, I'm sure) is heavy stuff, you might to lay off for awhile... "La Peste were one of the first, one of the more abrasive and the most musically advanced of Boston's original '70s punk banks. They made one of the first great Boston punk singles, 'Better Off Dead,' well known among the 'Killed By Death' crowd. Better Off La Peste contains tons of never-before released tracks and is completely different from the horrible quality bootleg of years ago and is for the most part different from the long out of print Matador LP from the '90s. This album fits like a glove next to the Bacchus Archives East Coast reissues by The Thrills and The Rattlers, along with our mondo early LA punk reissue catalog. On songs like 'Don't Wanna Die in My Sleep Tonight' and the evergreen classic 'Better Off Dead,' the band honed a dense, edgy three-piece sound that belied the sparse instrumentation creating it. They were masters of the subtle, repeating riff and the open string drone, marking the path followed -- in different ways -- by bands like U2, The Smiths and Husker Du. La Peste songs were often filmic, and they could sway lyrically from the film noir to quickie power pop confessionals. During the years they spent in Boston, La Peste were one of the most popular and critically loved groups on the scene, and their live shows never failed to generate real excitement, a sense that this was an event you were witnessing. In that respect, they had the stuff of stardom. But like most of the others I'd put in that list of the dozen best Boston bands, their star never really ascended." -- Joe Harvard

The Defects - Defective Breakdown (1983)

Band’s one and only album, the wonderful ‘Defective Breakdown’ released in 1983.

http://depositfiles.com/files/p2x3aev3g

The Defects - The Defects 1979-1984 (2010)

The Defects are a punk rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The band formed in 1978 with a lineup of Ian "Buck" Murdock (vocals), Marcus "Dukie" Duke (guitar), Jeff Gilmore (bass) and Glenn Kingsmore (drums).

After playing locally, they recorded their first demo, but when this failed to gain them a record deal, they started their own Casualty Records label and issued their debut 7", "Dance (Until You Drop)". The three-song EP sold all 2,000 copies and brought the band to the attention of the UK music press. Melody Maker journalist Carol Clerk befriended the band and recommended them to John Curd, manager of WXYZ Records, who signed them to his label. Gary Smith replaced Fenton on bass, and the Defects moved to London in 1982 and embarked on the six-week "So What" UK tour with labelmates the Anti-Nowhere League, Chelsea and Chron Gen. The tour was filmed by Stewart Copeland (with backing from brother Miles) and intended for cinema release, but it was never issued.

A second single, "Survival", was issued in 1982, reaching No. 8 in the UK Indie Chart. The band released their debut album, Defective Breakdown, in 1982.

With Curd looking for ways to gain crossover success for the bands on his label, he persuaded the Defects to record a cover version of Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" with producer Ray Shulman on keyboards. The single's release in early 1984 coincided with the decline in popularity of second-wave punk, and did not sell well. With control of the band's destiny slipping away, Murdock left after the release of "Suspicious Minds". The band continued, playing a gig supporting 999 with Kingsmore on vocals, before Murdock rejoined to play in support of the Clash in Belfast. The band then permanently split, with all members returning to Belfast except Duke, who stayed in London. Kingsmore joined Western Justice with former members of Rabies, including Murdock's brother Gary, and was later a member of Ashanti.

Murdock revived the Defects name in 1996 for a one-off performance at a punk festival at the Bath Pavilion, which was filmed and released on video by Barn End Video as Live at the Pavilion 12.10.96. He later started the punk and ska covers band Doghouse.

The Defects reformed again in 2010 and played various punk festivals. Added to the lineup were Roy McAllister and Aidy "Fudge" Dunlop (replacing Smith and Duke). In 2012, they toured Australia, followed by appearances at the Rebellion Punk Festival in Blackpool in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Since 2014, Duke occasionally joins them on stage for some of their best known songs.

Dif Juz - Out Of The Trees (LP, Mini-Album, 1986)

Dif Juz were an English instrumental post-punk band, formed in London in 1980 and remaining active until 1986. The band comprised Dave Curtis (guitar), Alan Curtis (guitar), Gary Bromley (bass guitar) and Richard Thomas (percussion and saxophone).

Out Of The Trees - it's a compilation of the "Huremics" and "Vibrating Air" two first EPs, with the latter being remixed to pointless effect. Great post-punk mixture of reggae and jazz

Twice a Man - The Sound of a Goat in a Room (1983)

Excellent second album of dark, experimental, synth-based new wave from this longstanding Swedish duo. Some songs are ready for a goth night dance floor, but most are better suited for solitary drug use.

Oppenheimer Analysis - New Mexico (1982)

Truly phenomenal English synthpop/minimal wave. Really, some of the best of its kind. For fans of minimal wave and DIY electronic pop.

Oppenheimer Analysis formed in London, England in 1982 by Andy Oppenheimer and Martin Lloyd. Their first meeting though was at the 1979 World Science Fiction Convention in Brighton. They quickly became good friends, sharing an interest in the work of David Bowie, electronic music and early synthesizer bands such as the Human League and Soft Cell. They also shared a love of old science fiction movies, 1950s graphics and comic book imagery and a fascination with post-World War II propaganda, the politics and aesthetics of the Cold War, and the social impact of the atomic bomb. Over the next few years Andy and Martin frequented the growing club scene, including Studio 21 on Oxford Street, and became involved in the developing Futurist and New Romantic style sub-cultures. During this period Martin recorded as Analysis, both alone and with David Rome of Drinking Electricity. They released their first single, “Surface Tension/Connections” on David’s Survival label in 1981. In 1982, Oppenheimer Analysis began writing and recording together at Feedback Studio in Battersea, and performed several times at The Bell, Islington, the 1983 World David Bowie Convention in Hammersmith, the Starzone Birthday Party at Camden Palace, the 1984 European Science Fiction Convention in Brighton and other live venues. Their first demo tape and twelve song “New Mexico” cassette were sold at gigs and by mail-order, and were reviewed in Melody Maker, Sounds and Soundmaker. For the years to follow, Oppenheimer Analysis became recognized among electro-music aficionados as a pioneering duo who influenced countless other bands during the club and home-recording era of the early 1980s and beyond. Their cassettes became massively collectible. In 2005 they re-formed with the release of a self-titled four song 12” EP of selections from the New Mexico cassette, including “Cold War” and “The Devil’s Dancers”.

Aerial FX — Same River Twice 80-84 (2010, compilation)

In the early ‘80s, a five-piece band based out of Oxford dramatically changed their sound to meld with the surging new wave movement. They adopted the name Aerial FX, releasing two singles and one full album before their abrupt disbandment in the middle of the decade. Now, 25 years later, a full album’s worth of Aerial FX music has surfaced – Same River Twice. With 12 songs that have never seen the light of day until now, Aerial FX’s commemoration will make listeners yearn for a return to the days of new wave with its unabashed upbeat mood and lyrics.

Same River Twice is a fantastic flashback to the ‘80s new wave genre, filled with poppy dance numbers, catchy grooves, and a great rock sound. Sultry, melancholy vocals trade off with light and romantic ones. From the opening track of “Hold Me” through the ending track of “Make It for You (12” Version),” Aerial FX flaunts the genre outstandingly. Guitars collide with synth, from “Heatwave” to “Where Is Tomorrow” to “I See Changes.” However, while the music is very nostalgic and very enjoyable, this is by no means an outstanding album. It fits the mold of the genre for the time, doing all the right things in all the right places, but Aerial FX doesn’t jump out the way that artists such as New Order or Joy Division did. In fact, Aerial FX sounds very reminiscent of these bands and more, making them more of a mirror for the time.

Same River Twice is a solid album and a great reminder of 25 years ago. However, it is a repeat journey, as the album title implies, down the same river as many other bands. Aerial FX is a way to reminisce on the good old days as much as possible.

Batfish Boys - Head (1986)

'Head' is the second album of The Batfish Boys. Less postpunk, more straight forward rock. Some people prefer this album than the first one and vice versa. Here's your chance to decide for yourself.

Batfish Boys - The Gods Hate Kansas (1985)

When singer Simon Denbigh was booted from March Violets, he wasted little time in assembling a more conducive outfit. On The Gods Hate Kansas, the Batfish Boys take the Violets' dark post-punk and give it a traditional rock setting. Several of the best moments ("The Tumbleweed Thing," "Mrs. Triffid" and the terrific single, "Swamp Liquor") are reminiscent of the Cramps or Gun Club, utilizing creepy, twanging riffs and Denbigh's weird, roughly grumbled lyrics to create a bluesy, desolate atmosphere.

Sisters Of Mercy - Some Girls Wander by Mistake (compilation, 1992)

Collection of all five early seven inch and twelve inch singles, both a and B-sides, released between 1980-1983 before the band signed to a major label. 19 tracks including the extremely rare 'The Damage Done', 'Watch' and 'Home of the Hit-Men', as well as the original extended version of 'Temple of Love', their covers of the Rolling Stones' 'Gimme Shelter' and the Stooges' '1969', plus 'Alice', 'Kiss the Carpet', 'Valentine', 'Floorshow', 'Phantom' and more.

Trisomie 21 ‎– Passions Divisées (1984)

Trisomie 21 is a post punk band formed in 1981 by Phillipe Lomprez (vocals, drums) and Hervé Lomprez (guitar, electronics), two brothers from Abscon, in the North of France. They began composing songs at the age of 16 while studying at school. The brothers were influenced by Kraftwerk, The Residents, Yello, P.I.L as well as the films of George A. Romero. Their music consists of lush soundscapes that do not easily fit into any one category. Lyrics are sung in English because in the north of France the duo sought to contradict the trend at the time for everything to be sung in French. Musically their mood is melancholic and one can hear traces of Joy Division, Durutti Column and The Cure. Since 1983 they’ve recorded 15 albums and appeared on numerous compilations and remain active to this day.

After the success of the debut mini-LP the band returned to the studio and spent October 1983 to March 1984 recording their sophomore album. ‘Passions divisées’ was released by Stechak Products in October 1984. Pascal Tison was replaced by Laurent Dagnicourt on bass guitar. Featuring eight cold wave compositions including the instrumental funeral waltz “La fête triste”. Songs cross genres, moving from post-punk to synthetic electronics. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The LP is housed in a replica of the original jacket featuring a artwork by Sourdeval and includes a photo postcard featuring lyrics and notes.

In The Nursery - When Cherished Dreams Come True (1983)

English post-punk. Sonically sparse and compositionally minimal, with vocals evoking emptiness and isolation. Very different from the industrial-based sounds they'd pursue from here on out.

The Essence - Ecstasy (1988)

Lush, atmospheric, synth-fueled Dutch goth rock. The Essence clearly were big fans of Faith-era The Cure, especially vocalist Hans Diener, but that's probably my favorite Cure record, and they do a bang-up job with it, so I'm not complaining.

WAH! - The Maverick Years 80 - 81 (1982)

LP collecting the band's earliest outtakes & demos. Its status is as an "official bootleg", made to look like the real thing but in fact released by the band during the reorganization of their own indie label, Eternal, before they signed a distribution deal with the giant WEA conglomerate.

3 Men + Black - Acoustic (2005)

3 men are from the Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, and the Jam; Pauline Black is from the Selecter (and so is Nick Welsh, who does not count as a man, apparently). In 2004 they have decided to release an album containing acoustic renditions of some of their songs (or, in the case of Bruce Foxton, mostly his band partner's songs). I'm sharing this mostly because of Jake Burns's contributions, which are of course heavenly. I'm not a big fan of the Stranglers but JJ Burnel's stuff is also quite cool, and Bruce Foxton sounds quite a bit like Paul Weller - that's not a bad thing though. Pauline Black's songs I'm not so fond of, because while I do love the Selecter, I don't think these versions hold up to the regular ones; it's certainly an experiment, and while it doesn't sound like a successful one to my ears, it might to yours. The ballad "Missing Words" is quite nice, actually; it's the ska stuff that rubs me the wrong way played like this. Anyway, if you're a fan of the Stiff Little Fingers (which you really should be), you absolutely NEED the beautiful Jake Burns and the Big Wheel track "She Grew Up". I also quite like this version of a Stranglers track I'm very partial to, the new wave crossover hit "Skin Deep", and two other JJ Burnel's tracks are quite cool, too - a Hawkwind cover "Quark, Strangeness & Charm" and the funny hoedown "Jelly Fish".
