Chelsea - Mission impossible (2017)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Legendary punk rockers from the first wave of British punk, Chelsea are back with and new album containing fifteen energy packed tracks. The title track opens the album and Mission Impossible is an approachable punk rock track with power and melody sounding fresh and contemporary. Over the past couple of years we have seen new releases from Anti-Pasti, Chron Gen and The Ruts DC – and all have shown bands that have grown and are not content to retread old ground. Chelseachannel Cock Sparrer with a cockney infused vocal and terrace-chant chorus with I Can’t Take This – great track that shows the band at the top of their game with a 2017 sound rooted in fertile punk rock soil.

Control drives along at pace reminding me a little of the previously mentioned Ruts D.C. with a message of “You never take control of me” resonating deeply in todays world. Chelsea have produced an album full of hooks and melody with songs like Fashion and I Don’t Know, I Don’t Care promising to be live favorites with their ‘punch the air’ choruses and mosh-pit inducing rhythms.

Jackie’s Got A Gun continues to hammer out the hooks with a Sham 69 approach whilst Suit In The Spotlight delivers a reggae rhythm mixed in with a punk rocker of a chorus. Chelsea have clearly hit a productive songwriting streak and the fifteen songs keep on coming at you with right hooks and left hooks a plenty as they do on Let Me Go and the straightforward punk rocker of You’re No Fun.

The band showcase some nifty acoustic guitar work on the anthem like Sands Of Time that will have many an old punker shedding a tear in their beer! With Something In The Air, Chelsea channel The Clash with some reggae infused verses and swaggering punk rock choruses.

The penultimate track, Sun Stop Shining, is an upbeat song with full band backing vocals adding to the terrace feel. The album concludes with Make It Happen where the band bring it all together – the power chords, driving bass, pounding drums and melodic cockney permeated vocals – it makes for a great package – Chelsea are back and they ain’t going through the motions!

The Prats ‎– Now That's What I Call Prats Music + Peel Sessions'79 (2005 compilation)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

What can one add to the legend of the Prats? A flame that burnt so brightly,so briefly, for a few months between 1979 and 80,only to be destroyed by the adolescent urge to be 'sophisticated'. It's for this reason one has disgarded the A-side of the 'General Davis' single, with its horrible 'political' awareness, and cheesy moral theme.....yuk! Children shouldn't be corrupted with such shit, gimmie 'Lord of the Flies' over the young conservatives conference any day of the week.
All the hits are here, from 'Inverness' to 'Disco Pope' to that dodgy german one. It's always good to see an unhealthy obsession with german's too, they even had an unrecorded song in their live set called 'Nazi Aircraft'......Dr.Spock (the child psychologist not the Vulcan Science Officer from Star Trek,he was called Mister Spock) would be spinning in his grave.
The mythical Peel Session is included in the download, during which the late Mr Ravenscroft commented, rather prophetically; "If they are this good now, just think how good they're gonna be when they are as old as Siouxsie and the Banshees? The chances are,as often happens, they won't be as good as they are now. But,time will tell."

Flesh For Lulu - Flesh For Lulu [1984]

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Nick Marsh (vocals and guitar) and James Mitchell (drums) formed the band and soon recruited Rocco (originally from Wasted Youth, guitar and vocals), and Glen Bishop (bass), taking their name from an American cult movie. After a well received John Peelsession, they signed to Polydor Records in 1983, and soon thereafter, bassist Glen Bishop left to join Under Two Flags, and was replaced by Kevin Mills (formerly of Specimen).

Their first EP, "Roman Candle" did well, but the label dropped them a year later after their eponymous first album failed to find any commercial success.

Flesh for Lulu was a rock band formed in Brixton, London active between 1982 and 1992. They reformed from 2013 to 2015 with a new lineup. Their music was a mix of the New York Dolls and the Rolling Stones, with gothic rock's gloomy atmosphere and aesthetics, while also encompassing shades of punk, pop, country and western, Marc Bolan, David Bowie, rockabilly and garage. Volcano Suns - The Bright Orange Years (1985)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

By the time Boston’s Mission of Burma split in 1983, the postpunk pioneer had only a modest discography to its credit but had already made an enormous contribution to an ambitious new strain of American rock combining a DIY ethos with more tuneful and cognitive arrangements. Though he sang a fraction of Burma’s catalog, drummer Peter Prescott surprised many fans when he emerged as the only Burma member to continue in a similar vein, starting with Volcano Suns.

Following Merge Records’ anthologizing of fellow Bostonites Big Dipper last March, a Volcano Suns retrospective seems appropriate enough. The trio’s first two LPs, The Bright Orange Years and All-Night Lotus Party—originally released in ’85 and ’86, respectively, on Homestead Records—capture the band at its peak. Together, they’re an indicative slab of 1980s guitar-driven college rock that could inconspicuously slip onto a playlist between Hüsker Dü’s New Day Rising and R.E.M.’s Murmur.

Westdeutsche Christen - Westdeutsche Christen (1982)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Second release of Berlin's Joy Division influenced Westdeutsche Christen. Their first one is a 12" 'Lass Mich Nicht Allein' released by the band themselves in 1980. Has some minimalist punkwave tracks on it but sounds quite unfinished. This album is way better in my opinion.
This album was released in 1982 on Good Noise, a label some people will know from some of the Leningrad Sandwich records.

Crisis started out in late 70s UK with the rise of the punk movement. They were at the forefront of the political take on punk. Their songs were about the state of the country, the government and anti-Nazism. They released three 7" singles and a mini-LP. They split in 1980.
Originally released in 1980 on Ardkor Records.

METAL URBAIN - Les Hommes Morts Sont Dangereux 1981

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Fine Synthpunk now by this band which were formed 1976 in Paris.

"Short-lived, but very influentious band of the late seventies, one of the first bands to combine the drum machine with electric guitars and synthesizers, one of the few French bands to record with John Peel and the first to release a single on Rough Trade. Metal Urbain had focused their efforts on singles, and only produced one album, Les Hommes Morts Sont Dangereux, during their first period of activity. However, several compilation records were released, gathering their singles with additional material such as BBC sessions and live recordings. The band reunited in 2003 to tour in the USA, and had since toured consistently in France and the rest of Europe. Metal Urbain recorded in 2006 their first studio album, "J'irai Chier Dans Ton Vomi", produced by Jello Biafra in San Francisco; a follow up mini-album, Creve Salope, was issued in 2008."

F-Word - Like It Or Not (Live 1978)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

F-WORD were the first Los Angeles punk rock band to release an album. Their 3 tracks 1978 debut 7'' Ep on Posh Boy (including Darby Crash's 'Shutdown' cover) was also their only record, as the group disbanded when Dutch Schultz (aka Will Shatter) and Steve Effete DePace (Stephen DePace) went north and formed FLIPPER. Singer Rik L Rik went on to SoCal punk notoriety. Paul Sercu (a.k.a. Dim Wanker) was on guitar.

Circle X - Prehistory (1983)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Circle X formed in 1978 out of 2 punkbands, No Fun and the I-Holes. Originally located in Louisville, Kentucky, the band relocated to New York to take part in the no wave scene. A 7" called 'Heartbreaker' was released in 1979.

Circle X stayed in France for a while where they recorded a 4 track 12" for Celluloid in 1980. The band went back to NY to record the classic 'Prehistory' LP which was released in 1983 on Enigma/Index.

'Prehistory'  is another great release from Circle X, this one is basically a more refined version of Untitled, but don't let that discourage you. Prehistory is also way more post-punk influenced than their debut EP. It's still very chaotic, but in a much more organized way, if that makes any sense.

Man Sized Action - Claustrophobia (1983)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Minneapolis' Man Sized Action were one of a handful of bands taken under the wing of Reflex Records, Husker Du's in-house record label during the early and mid-80s.  Responsible for issuing Husker's "Statues" 7" and first proper studio album, Everything Falls Apart, Reflex released both of MSA's albums, Claustrophobia and Five Story Garage.  Crisply produced by Bob Mould himself, Claustrophobia is a lost, noir-wave treasure, brimming with jagged post-punk, often skirting the periphery of hardcore.  Tippy's sweet, clangy guitar lines often outshine Pat Woods four-parts spoken/one-part sung vocals, but the real wow-factor for me is the band's spot-on approximation of the unrelated Middle Class,' especially their little known classic, Scavanged Luxury ep.  In fact, "Private Eye" and "Yea" almost strike me as plagiaristic, but when the results are this white hot I can hardly complain.  Wire's Pink Flag, and Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures also seemed to have been vying for space on this quartet's collective turntable.  If you enjoy this, check out The Verge's Habitual 7" ep I shared a few moons ago.  Recorded in the same year but a good thousand miles away in Albany, NY, The Verge were operating on an identical wavelength as Man Sized Action.

As a further aside, I have it on good authority that this particular copy of Claustrophobia was previously owned by the late Kristen Pfaff of Hole and Janitor Joe.  R.I.P. Kristen.  For what it's worth, your record is in good hands.

The Professionals - What In The World (2017)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

35 years later, the band formed from the ashes of the Sex Pistols by Paul Cook and Steve Jones is back. The band proudly release their new album What In The World on October 27th 2017, on Automaton Records.

The album is authentic and solid throughout and, as the band state: “We’re not breaking any musical boundaries – we’re doing what we do best. From the heart with energy and integrity.”

The Professionals are joined by a stellar cast of guest guitar players including original member Steve Jones (who plays on three tracks). Duff McKagen (Guns ‘n’ Roses), Mick Jones (The Clash), Phil Collen (Def Leppard), Marco Pirroni (Adam & The Ants), Chris McCormack (3 Colours Red) and Billy Duffy (The Cult) also join the party.

The Micronotz - 40 Fingers (1986)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It seemed like I had been hearing of the Micronotz (formally the Mortal Micronotz) for decades before actually encountering any of their records. That changed a few months ago when a used copy of 40 Fingers materialized at a price I couldn't refuse. By the time this Lawrence, KS tribe got around to recording the album in question, original mouthpiece Dean Lubensky was out of the picture, and in his stead arrived one Jay Hauptli whose gruff and tumble vocal aplomb takes some getting used to (if at all). 40 Fingers is steeped in period Midwest punk and hardcore, searing and vigorous at best and a bit routine at worst. The Micronotz were regulars at Husker Du's Zen Arcade, dropping more than a few tokens into tuneful, riveting slots like "Black and White" and "Fall Down." Elsewhere the quartet veers in the vicinity of Naked Raygun, Rifle Sport, and to a lesser extent White Flag. Several records preceded 40 Fingers, and in 1995 two posthumous digital collections preserved the bands work, though I'll be damned if I can find them.

Rexy - Running out of time (1981)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Originally released in 1981 and long since out of print, the singular LP from London based pop duo Rexy entitled ‘Running Out of Time’ for a long time now has been the holy grail for fans of British New Romantic leftfield pop.

Meeting in the heady milieu amongst London’s ‘Blitz Kids’ scene, which in 1979 brought a dash of much needed colour to another wise grim and gray capital – hot on the heels of the election of Margaret Thatcher and sanitation strikes – fashion student ‘Rex’ Nayman and Eurythmics band member Vic Martin formed Rexy after bonding over a shared affinity for maverick pop music and creatively flamboyant DIY clothing fashions.

Running Out of Time (ROOT), was a ten-song LP of idiosyncratic, catchy synth-pop, which was released in 1981. Whilst songs like the title track explore the same territory marked out by the band’s first single, the album isn’t just confined to an intimacy of subdued post-punk. Pieces like the almost instrumental, Nervoso, and Alien display the band’s proficiency at creating propulsive, large-scale pop productions, the songs’ swirls of glistening keyboards and fast-paced hi-hat hits coming across like ‘70s disco outfit Space produced by French pop guru Jean-Claude Vannier.

Fashion - Product Perfect (1979)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

There are two versions of Fashion. This is the first version with singer/guitarist Luke James. The music at this time is a kind of scarce art rock. A synthesizer is used, but not to create a wall of sound as the later Fashion did. Luke's voice is unique.

And there are two versions of this lp. The second version included the single Steady Eddie/Killing Time, but is without Burning Down. And some titles were in French (v?r? stylish). I made a combination of the two and added a song from the I.R.S. greatest hits vols.2 +3 sampler I had on a cassette tape.

Jo Broadbery & The Standouts - 1980 - S/T

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Technically, Jo Broadbery and the Standouts was originally released in 1980 on Virgin Records, and was labeled and credited to an entirely different music entity, Local Operator.  Under that original guise, the album had a proper title, Pushing Out the Poets, which didn't carry over when it was reissued with thoroughly new sleeve art.  I don't have the scoop on why such a drastic alteration was called for, but my guess is that the label wasn't satisfied with the "optics" of the Local Operator version of the record, and thought that they could better market the group with Jo posing on the album jacket.

In a nutshell, this adeptly penned power pop album delivers in spades.  It's heavy Elvis Costello slant serves not so much as the end, rather a durable means for Broadbery and Co. to build on.  Super tight arrangements and the hooks are nothing to sneeze at either.  The aforementioned sophomore record, House of Love proved to be the group's final offering, and tragically, Jo would pass away in 1987 at a relatively tender age.

Wild Billy Childish And CTMF - Brand New Cage (2017)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Brand new album from Billy Childish’s CTMF!

“The punk was in me and it had to come out, You mite try to dismiss me as dockyard lout, but I never sort fame – I came to glory by a different rout”
Billy Childish – ‘The Punk Was In Me (And It Had Come Out)’

“We’re like a cherry tree in the garden that nobody can be bothered to scrump cos it has slightly undersized fruit which has not been standardised for a supermarket. But we’re the real thing and the jays and the crows like us.”

Wild Billy Childish & CTMF are back with their fifth album in five years. Brand New Cage follows the critically acclaimed SQ1 album from 2016. It features 10 new Billy Childish songs along with two written and sung by the band’s bassist Nurse Julie. Subjects include lost landmarks of ’70s Chatham, the true revolution of punk, spirituality, lost loves and the sidelining of Brian Jones from The Rolling Stones.

Some of the tracks have already been featured in the first double session on BBC 6Music, this was a track a night on the Marc Riley & Gideon Coe shows in July 2017 (Now released on a 10” LP – catalogue number DAMGOOD485). The sleeve art features a photo of an 18-year old Billy taken in a King’s Cross photo booth in September 1978. – “I used to cut these tribal marks into my cheeks every few weeks with a razor blade. I was really interested in African tribal scars, and I knew they had ash in there so I would rub cigarette ash in – very painful! I’m actually dressed there the most dangerous way you could be, as a punk rock teddy boy. The teds didn’t like you wearing any ted gear.I’ve got a leopardskin waistcoat, bootlace tie and my hair flat. You had 40 year old men that would glass you. We’d go see Bo Diddley in ’70s and we’d dress a little bit ted. I was on a few death lists locally with teddy boys.”

Pere Ubu - 20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo (2017)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Fronted as ever by David Thomas, Pere Ubu unveil their new album, 20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo, which opens the doors of the avant-garage to reveal the hardworking mechanics hammering away at the fundamentals of blue-collar rock. 20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo will be released on Cherry Red Records on Friday 29th September 2017.

A three-guitar revision sees Keith Moliné, Gary Siperko and Kristof Hahn (The Swans) expand the established orchestra of analog and digital synths (Wheeler, Gagarin), clarinet (Boon), drums (Mehlman) and Thomas’ unique vocals.

20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo follows their 2015 release Carnival of Souls, which was widely praised by the media and used by cult series ‘American Horror Story’ in Season 4.

David Thomas: “The new album is The James Gang teaming up with Tangerine Dream. The Chinese Whispers methodology we worked on the last two albums has been replaced by the Dark Room. Put musicians in a lightless room and by feeling one small section of an unknown object have them figure what it must be.”

The album was recorded and mixed at Suma, Painesville Ohio. Engineer Paul Hamann, and his father before him, have been part of almost every Pere Ubu album since 1976.

Pere Ubu will be on tour with the new album later this year in the USA, with a full European tour and further USA dates in 2018.

For their second album, 1981's Love Too Late, Sorrows were paired up with legendary producer Shel Talmy, who in the mid-'60s had worked with the Who, the Kinks, the Creation, and the Easybeats; unfortunately, the idea of working with Talmy was better than the results, and the album didn't fare as well with critics and sold no better than they debut. Sorrows - Teenage Heartbreak (1980)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A tough but tuneful new wave pop band from New York City, Sorrows (no "the," please) were formed by guitarist and singer Arthur Alexander in 1977 a few months after the breakup of his influential power pop combo the Poppees. With tongue slightly in cheek, Alexander described his vision for Sorrows as "ABBA meets the Sex Pistols," and he recruited his former Poppees bandmate Jett Harris to play drums in the new group, along with guitarist Joey Cola and bassist Ricky Street. Sorrows soon made a name for themselves on the New York club scene, regularly playing CBGB's, Max's Kansas City, and other hip night spots, and in 1979, the band landed a record deal with Pavilion Records, a division of CBS. But while their debut album, 1980's Teenage Heartbreak, earned enthusiastic reviews and became a cult favorite among pop obsessives, the label's promotion was minimal and the record sold poorly. Dwight Twilley Band - Sincerely (1976)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Sincerely is the debut album from the Dwight Twilley Band, released in 1976 on Shelter Records. The band consisted solely of Dwight Twilley (guitar, piano, lead and harmony vocals) and Phil Seymour (drums, bass, percussion, lead and harmony vocals), although touring band member Bill Pitcock IV played lead guitar on every song except for "Sincerely" itself. The album credited production to Oister, which was the original name of the Dwight Twilley Band; later reissues have credited production directly to Twilley and Seymour.

Sincerely is the kind of perfect, would-be classic power pop record that makes you realize just how arbitrary success in the music business is.

So, much like their spiritual comrades, Big Star, the Dwight Twilley Band mixed 70s dad rock sounds with a kinda fey, pop-oriented approach and ended up generating a series of positively perfect power pop gems while toiling in virtual obscurity; unlike Big Star, though, DTB --and their namesake, who continues to record and release records to this day -- have stayed there. I only found them because their song"Looking for the Magic" is prominently featured in the movie You're Next. Having finally heard it, though, I genuinely believe that Dwight Twilley should be at least indie-famous by now, and I implore you: give this one a spin.

Notdurft is a punkrock legend from Bielefeld/Germany. They recorded this classic album in 1982 and was released on the legendary Berliner AGR label. The songs goes a little bit soft & poppy (hard speedy numders also there, don't worry) and is nowadays a very fine record. So here is enough rough energy that made them the most legendary punkrockers in this town. Also essential the three goodies from the brilliant Soundtracks Zum Untergang 2 compilation.

Signed to Schallter in 1982 and released LP X-Beliebig. Disbanded shortly thereafter without special reasons with only Bernd Bechtloff to follow a carreer as a professional musician.

The Raincoats - 1983-Moving

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Album number three, 1984’s Moving, proved to be the band’s downfall. More specifically, democracy was the band’s undoing. We often hear tales of domineering personalities destroying bands, but the Raincoats discovered the corollary to that problem. Birch said (again, to Unterberger), “We really endeavored to be incredibly democratic, which meant that as we grew apart, or as our influences grew more and more diverse, that we ended up not really knowing how to censor ourselves.”

Not that Moving is without some fantastic moments. “No One’s Little Girl” pops up occasionally on post-punk and new wave anthologies, and rightfully so. It’s as good as anything the band ever recorded.

Sway - Human Carnage (1979)

Obscure pearl coming from Belgium, active in the late 70's. The group Sway was formed in the city of Liege and had as keyboardist and leader Yvon Hubert (ex-Laurelie) and with one ex-member of S to S. They launched an only and rare album in 1979 privately and most in their shows. The album Human Carnage consists of 10 short tracks of progressive rock typical of late 70s, having its best, creative and complex, moments led by Hubert, with synthesizer and organ and more melodic passages of folk and classic rock, with good guitar, saxophone and percussion solos. The lyrics are all in English. Emphasis on "Human Carnage", "Why" and "Sway". Recommended for progressive rock fans at the time.

The lead singer was Gabriele Kerner (Gabriele Susanne Kerner), before she became known as Nena Kerner, who would later form the band Nena. Another future member of the band Nena, Rolf Brendel (Nena's boyfriend at the time), played the drums. Frank Röhlerplayed bass. The band was known for singing exclusively in English. They released four singles and one studio album, after which they split up in May 1982. Their song "Ecstasy" was a minor hit.

The Restless - S/T (1984)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

In terms of vintage garage-cum-power pop in the environs of Buffalo, NY, the Terry Sullivan helmed Jumpers are one of the few names still readily recalled from the late '70s/early '80s "punk" era.  I featured them eons ago on these pages via their '79 "Sick Girls" 45.  A classic, local or otherwise.  Ironically, after the Jumpers disconnected, Terry went on to front the altogether more ambitious and visible The Restless.  I say ironically in the respect that the Jumpers who only released a local single are lauded and talked about way more than the Restless, who not only recorded a full length, but issued it under the auspices of a major label, Mercury, to be exact, in 1984. Per the norm with '80s mainstream albums, The Restless skewed to the more pedestrian side of the spectrum, but the songs were often well above average.  Shades of the Tubes, not to mention the more flattering side of Reagan-era Cheap Trick abound on sassy, bristling slammers like "The Contender," "1000 X"and "I Wanna Know."  Although they ran circles around most of their AOR contemporaries, The Restless weren't particularly distinct, ergo they were one of many neglected big label casualties of their time.  Maybe folks were too preoccupied with watching the summer Olympics that year.  Mystery solved!  Enjoy (you will).

The Young Lords - S-T LP (1984)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

If the rather graphic depiction on the Young Lords album sleeve (to your left) has you doing a double take, it's probably for a valid reason.  Rage Against the Machine used a photo of the same self-immolating, Vietnamese Buddhist for their debut record as well.  Thing is, barely a modicum of intensity or tumult grazes the agenda of the Lords, a power trio whose modus operandi is par-for-the-course garage rock.  Not a bullet or a bombtrack in sight.  Sonically unremarkable (to be quite honest) these guys drifted from lightweight psych to punkier barroom maneuvers, peppering their tunes with churning organ riffs and occasionally sax.  In spite of frequent generic tendencies, The Lords succeed in a face-value capacity, even exposing shards of character on "Working for the Underground" and "I Want a Doctor Like Elvis Had."  A halfway there cover of "There She Goes Again" (cleverly hidden under the title of "Here She Comes") is somehow not credited to the Velvet Underground. Funny that.

Richard Lloyd - Field Of Fire (1985)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It was released in 1986, seven years after his solo debut, Alchemy. The album was recorded in Stockholm, Sweden, backed mostly by Swedish musicians.

The liner notes state that the album is "dedicated to the lodestone". The album sleeve also includes a quote from St. Paul's epistle to the Romans (chapter 15, verse 13, NIV): "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

Richard Lloyd - Alchemy (1979)

Alchemy is the debut solo album of Television guitarist, Richard Lloyd. It was released in 1979, one year after the break up of Television and the release of their second album, Adventure. Trouser Press called it "a gem of a solo album." Its title track was a minor New York FM radio hit.

It features Lloyd on lead guitar, harmonica, piano and vocals, Matthew Mackenzie on guitar, piano and background vocals, James Mastro (later of the Bongos) on guitar, Fred Smith (of Television) on bass, "Heineken bass" and background vocals, and Vinny DeNunzio (formerly of the Feelies) on drums and background vocals. Producer Michael Young later added guitar and synthesizer overdubs to some tracks, which Lloyd has stated that he strenuously opposed.

The Suicide Commandos - Time Bomb (2017)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Suicide Commandos release their second album Friday — and given that it’s 39 years in the making, it’s got a particularly appropriate title: “Time Bomb.”

The pioneering Minneapolis punk rock trio — Osgood, bassist Steve Almaas and drummer Dave Ahl — formed in 1975 with a stripped-down, ferocious sound that updated the garage rock of the ’60s for a new generation. They opened the doors for the flood of local bands that followed, including the Replacements, Husker Du and the Suburbs. But their initial run lasted just four years.

Berlin Blondes - S/T (1980)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A late 70's minimal synth wave band from Glasgow, Scotland.
"The first single was released early in 1980, so that was before the phrase 'New Romantic' had been coined. I guess they would have been called 'Futurists'. Something I've noticed from looking in old copies of Sounds mag from 1980 is they often used term "New Musik" for anything weird that used synths".

The Sweat - No More Running (1981)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Clive Culbertson was the driving force behind Ireland's The Sweat, but if you don't recognize either of those names you're hardly alone, especially if you find yourself Stateside. For that matter, given the bent of No More Running's reissue liner notes, you'd get the impression they didn't make a dent in the British Isles either, due to a poor distribution effort on the part of The Sweat's label, Double D. Furthermore, this is one record that really deserved an entry in John Borack's Top 200 power pop albums roster in the 2007 Shake Some Action book. No More Running is sincerely that white-hot of a contender, entailing such deftly crafted, melodious salvos as "You Gotta Lotta Nerve," "How Much Longer" and "Isn't Anything Sacred Anymore." Culbertson's aptitude often borders the same hallowed turf as Shoes, Jesus of Cool-era Nick Lowe, and the Nerves (yes, thatNerves). When you place this high a premium on hooks the results are bound to be good, and in this case they're veritably off the charts.
Sonically, the fidelity on No More Running dangles towards the "lo" end of the spectrum, oozing warm, analogue hues that couldn't be replicated in this day and age no matter how much effort was put forth to do so. In short, this is power pop as it used to be made, and Culbertson happens to be an immensely unheralded practitioner of the medium. The 2007 reissue on the Japanese 1977 imprint includes seven bonus cuts, including four from Clive's precursor act No Sweat. Additional material from this era was also committed to tape under his own name, and is available on a separate release that I can hopefully attend to later (and you shouldn't have to wait a whole 'nother year to partake in it).
