Hugh Cornwell - Monster (2018)

Former Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell is returning to the fray with a new album and tour later this year.

New album ‘Monster’ released on October 5, each track dedicated to Cornwell’s heroes and villains from history, politics and the arts.

It’s a diverse gallery, ranging from Lou Reed (‘Mr. Leather’) to Mose Allison (‘Mosin’’), to ’70s stuntman Evel Knievel (Pure Evel), 1940s Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr (‘The Most Beautiful Girl In Hollywood’) to Sgt Bilko star Phil Silvers (‘Bilko’), Italian dictator Benito Mussolini (‘Duce Coochie Man’) and Zimbabwe ex-president Robert Mugabe (‘Robert’).

Joe Strummer – Joe Strummer 001 (2018)

A new box set devoted to the solo work of The Clash frontman, who passed in 2002. Subscribers of Apple Music and Spotify can stream select songs from the project below.

The expansive box set encompasses Strummer’s recordings with the 101ers and The Mescaleros, as well as his soundtrack work. Much of the curation comes via his widow, Luce, who’s been archiving the remains of his writings and tapes. Joining her was artist Robert Gordon McHarg III, who previously worked on The Clash’s Sound System box set. All the tracks were restored and mastered by Grammy winner Peter J. Moore. Previously, we’ve heard “London is Burning”, an alternate take of “Burnin’ Street” off his final Mescaleros album Streetcore, and “Rose of Erin”, a 1993 song from the film When Pigs Fly.

“The themes of these songs resonate. I kept thinking, ‘Wow, he was so ahead of his times, but also current, and aware of the past at the same time,” McHarg III of Strummer in an interview with Rock Cellar. “It’s almost like past, present and future is all rolled up into one in everything he touched.”

The box set will be available in a number of formats, including a limited edition deluxe box set that will feature vinyl pressings, a 7-inch vinyl single, a cassette, an art print, collectibles, and an accompanying book featuring rare, unpublished photographs, memorabilia, reviews, and technical notes. “The idea behind the book is that it’s an A4 notebook done as if Joe had designed it himself, telling his story,” McHarg III said in a press release.

‘Mission of Dead Souls’ documents the notorious final performance of Throbbing Gristle in their original incarnation (1975-1981). Recorded at Kezar Pavillion, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco on 29th May, 1981 and unavailable on vinyl since the early ‘90s, it’s now back on wax with a new inner sleeve including photos and a passage of text by Jon Savage

Recorded by Monte Cazzaza, long a satellite member of the band, ‘Mission of Souls’ captures the band in a period of broken relationships and internecine collapse, which definitely only adds to its historical weight as a document of the late 20th C’s most important band in its death throes.

Counting Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter and Peter "Sleazy” Christopherson on stage, the infamous four generate a dense black energy in ten parts, culminating in killer and now classic takes on ‘Spirits Flying’, a possessed version of ‘Persuasion U.S.A.’, and a trampling curtain call with ‘Discipline (Reprise)’.

Punk legend TV SMITH to release new album ’Land Of The Overdose‘

Described as “one of the most important political songwriters in the U.K” TV Smith’s new studio album “Land Of The Overdose” will be released by JKP, the label of German outfit Die Toten Hosen on September 14, 2018.

TV Smith comments:

“It‘s been a long journey from 1977. I used to think that punk rock was a one-off protest movement, but sadly now in 2018 there is even more to protest about. The punk spirit lives on. In “Land Of The Overdose” I‘ve tried to sum up everything I feel about what‘s wrong with the world and what we can do about it. The only compensation for me about the awful state we find ourselves in is that it‘s inspired me to come up with some of the best songs I‘ve ever written. I hope this album sends out a positive message that if we recognise the problems in the world things can start to change for the better, and that music can be a force for the good.”
