HOLLYWOOD SQUARES - Hillside Strangler! [Restrangled] 2006

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Brilliant Re-release by the Italian label Rave-Up Records and I recommend to buy this record because this is real classic. Detailed information included and all brilliant recordings plus the B-side had live recordeds from the Whisky-a-Go-Go on May 13, 1978 in Los Angeles. Notes from the back cover: "The Hollywood Squares were an American band formed in Los Angeles/California in 1977. They are probably best known for their classic "Hillside Strangler". They broke new ground on the Southern California musical landscape, influencing punk and new wave bands for generations to follow. Guitarist Eddie Vincent and drummer Tad, having played together in various bands since the early seventies, found themselves in London after a gig in Switzerland during the famous punk summer of 1977. Enthusiastically responding to the energy and mayhem of the punk explosion, they were inspired, once back home in L.A., to form the power trio they dubbed the Hollywood Squares. In 1978 they released in a very limited edition on the trio's own Square Records label their first 7'', the issue quickly sold out and has since become a highly sought-after collectible. The single has reappeared in various bootleg incarnations over the years including the 1989 compilation album Killed By Death #1. Eddie's tongue-in-cheek lyric was torn from the headlines that kept a frightened Los Angeles in turmoil for months, and the single spawned a string of bootlegs and uncredited cover versions by punk wannabes that continues to this day. Although new songs were recorded, the group folded before their release. With little contemporary record-label interest or compensation for their work, by the end of summer 1979 the members had gone their separate ways." Only hits here, 24 minutes of explosive material, essential!!!!

JACK & THE RIPPERS - A Wonderful Piece Of Punk Rock 1997

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Jack & The Rippers were one of the first punk bands in Switzerland, based in Geneva, which has at that time an equally vibrant punk scene such as Zurich. Most important members of the band were the brothers John (vocals) and Francois (guitar) Seilern, Englishman with Austrian blood which that occurs from the work of their parents were aground in Switzerland. Their mischief drove the Rippers although only for about 8 months (October 77 - June 78), and therefore the release of their first single experienced no longer as a band. Musically the band can be describe as brilliant power punk with strong English strike on the right track. Their only 7inch was released 1979 on Another Swiss Label in a small edition, 500 copies or so, and is for me one of the best swiss punk records all the time, (the original 7” single is now very hard to find.) 'No Desire' is a hymn, a short ecstasy with great lyrics. I could record the song on every compilation, totally addictive stuff! They recorded a 2nd 7inch 'Don't Pretend' but it was never released, first 2003 from Fan Club Company in limited edition of 500 published. Loud, Proud & Punk Records recognized the genius of this band and released this LP with all their early recordings, 2004 Dirty Faces comes with another compilation with two more songs. After the end of the band the Seilern brothers founded relatively quickly a new band with their bassist Babine and 2 members of another Geneva punk band (The Bastards) called the Zero Heroes. The sound was almost as significant to the English power pop with influences of ska elements, they released two albums. So enjoy this wonderful piece of punk rock!!!!

Stockholm Monsters - Alma Mater...Plus (1984, remastered 2002)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Debut album reissue's with bonus tracks of the Manchester's post-punk/indie-pop band Stockholm Monsters. Produced by Peter Hook of New Order, it was described by Allmusic as "a terribly satisfying record that was all but ignored at the time of its release but sounds absolutely prescient in hindsight". Several EPs and singles followed, including "How Corrupt is Rough Trade?", a cryptic attack on Factory's then distributor, which reached number 47 on the UK indie chart, and the Peter Hook-produced "Partyline", before the band split up in 1987.

Crispy Ambulance - The Plateau Phase (1982)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Crispy Ambulance were an English post-punk band, formed in Manchester in late 1977 by Alan Hempsall (vocals), Keith Darbyshire (bass), Gary Madeley (drums) and Robert Davenport (guitar). They had been inspired by the Sex Pistols' second gig in the Lesser Free Trade Hall and the bands Magazine and Hawkwind.

Excellent post punk album by this Manchester band. Crispy Ambulance started in 1977 as a two-man outfit but adding Keith Darbyshire and Gary Madeley to the line-up in 1978. During their first five years they recorded sessions for local and national radio and released several records on Factory, Factory Benelux and Aural Assault. They toured in the UK and Europe, both as headline act and as support to Joy Division, Killing Joke and Section 25. The Plateau Phase was released on vinyl by Factory Benelux (FBN 12) in 1982.

A Witness - I am John's Pancreas (1986)

Imagine Factory Records post-punk mixed with Big Black-esque noise rock and you’re pretty close to this album. Dirty, gritty and mad but refined! Unknown classic!

APB - Something To Believe In LP (1985) (compilation of singles 81-85)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Before they completed their debut LP, Scotland's APB first issued a singles compilation, 1985's Something to Believe In. Straying into the territory of jerky indie structures popularized by bands like Wire, APB would emphasize their peculiarities underneath a pop template, fashioning short, tight guitar riffs in the middle of songs which could've been sung by Debbie Harry if given the right production. But the band's sub-funk Scottish rock wore thin as a prolonged collection of singles.

Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth (1980) (2CD with bonus tracks etc)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Twenty-nine years after its release, Young Marble Giants’ legendary ‘Colossal Youth’ – Rough Trade, recorded in 1980 in five days and mixed in 20 minutes – remains a landmark in post-punk music, an enigma of its own, acclaimed by musicians and audience over the years.

Formed in 1978 in Cardiff, the trio’s music was constructed around the powerful and minimal instrumentation of brothers Philip and Stuart Moxham on bass and guitar, supporting the naive untrained vocals of Alison Statton.

Nirvana singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain said in a 1992 Melody Maker interview that Colossal Youth was one of the five most influential records he had ever heard.

WAH! Heat - 7 79 w WAH! Nah=Poo - The Art Of The Bluff LP 81 w 12 EP 83

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Brilliant underrated album of British singer/songwriter and guitarist Pete Wylie's project Wah! (or Wah! Heat).
Wylie was born in Liverpool, Lancashire. He began his career in 1977 with lead vocalist Ian McCulloch and bassist Julian Cope, with whom he formed the band Crucial Three, which lasted from May to June the same year. In September, he and Cope formed a short-lived band alongside Pete Burns, the Mystery Girls. In December 1977, he joined the Spitfire Boys.
This album is greatest unknown post-punk i ever heard!

Tuxedomoon - Half Mute (1980) + Scream With A View EP (1979)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Tuxedomoon is an experimental, post-punk, new wave band from San Francisco, California, United States. The band formed in the late 1970s at the beginning of the punk rock movement. Pulling influence from punk and electronic music, the group, originally consisting of Steve Brown and Blaine L. Reininger, used electronic violins, guitars, screaming vocals and synthesizers to develop a unique "cabaret no-wave" sound. Bassist Peter Principle joined the band and in 1979 they released the single "No Tears", which remains a post-punk cult classic. That year they signed to Ralph Records and released their first album, Half-Mute.

Names - Swimming (1982) + Singles (CD 1991)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Post-punk band from Brussels, they were signed to Factory Records and as a result got Martin Hannett as a producer for this album. Reminds me of Joy Division a lot, dreamy synths and stripped-down-to-perfection bass-lines. If you like post-punk at all, you’ll like this.

Factory Benelux presents new deluxe double vinyl and single CD editions of Swimming, the acclaimed album by Belgian new wave group The Names, originally issued in June 1982.

Between 1979 and 1982 The Names recorded a string of excellent records for Factory, Factory Benelux and Les Disques du Crépuscule, all helmed by legendary producer Martin Hannett. Recorded at Strawberry Studios in Manchester, Swimming has come to be regarded as a cold wave classic, combining strong songwriting from Michel Sordinia and poised, tasteful delivery by guitarist Marc Deprez and keyboards player Christophe Den Tandt.

Bonus tracks include singles Calcutta, Nightshift, The Astronaut and Spectators of Life, as well as the band's John Peel session from February 1982, the first ever recorded by a Belgian band. The gatefold sleeve also features original artwork and poster design by Benoît Hennebert, and photographs by Marc Portée.

Desperate Bicycles - Remorse Code (1979)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Desperate Bicycles were an English punk band who released a series of independent recordings in the late 1970s and inspired many other bands to do likewise. The Desperate Bicycles pioneered the do-it-yourself ethic of punk, adopting a proselytising role exemplified by their ardent exhortation: "it was easy, it was cheap - go and do it!". The group have been described as "DIY's most fervent evangelists".

Blue Orchids - The Greatest Hit (Blue Mountain) (1982, 2002 reissue with singles)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Formed by Martin Bramah and Una Baines after the pair left The Fall in 1979, Blue Orchids released a string of classic singles on the Rough Trade label, including Disney Boys, Work and the Agents Of Change EP, as well as classic album The Greatest Hit, which topped the indie chart in 1981. This edition includes all ten album tracks, together with nine bonus cuts from singles and EPs.

Also included is a rare version of All Tomorrow's Parties, performed by Nico and produced by the late, legendary Martin Hannett. Between 1981 and 1982 the Blue Orchids often performed as Nico's backing band, with guitarist Rick Goldstraw and drummer Toby present on this recording of the Velvets's classic.

Basement 5 - 1965-1980 LP (1980) + Silicon Chip 7''

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A band who were inextricably linked to the early punk days. Comprised of: -

Dennis Morris - Vocals (Sex Pistols photographer)
Leo Williams - Bass (Roxy club barman)
J.R. - Guitar
Richard Dudanski - Drums (ex 101'ers and PIL)

Managed by Don Letts, they existed for a short time and left far too few recordings behind. I've coupled their first 7'', first album and their Peel session together in this zip. They're not punk, but I defy anyone not to like the 1965-1980 album. After they split some members went on to form Urban Shakedown, who I remember seeing on a channel 4 telly programme in the early 80's. Another band worth checking out.

RED CRAYOLA - Soldier Talk (1979)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Red Krayola (formerly The Red Crayola) was a psychedelic, experimental rock band from Houston, Texas, formed by art students at the University of St. Thomas (Texas) in 1966. The band was led by singer/guitarist and visual artist Mayo Thompson, along with drummer Frederick Barthelme (brother of novelist Donald Barthelme) and Steve Cunningham. Their work prefigured punk, post-punk, indie rock and the no wave scene in 1980s New York City.

Mayo Thompson continued to make music, both under his own name and as The Red Crayola (reverting to the original name for Europe). He teamed up with American drummer Jesse Chamberlain and recorded the single "Wives in Orbit" and the album Soldier Talk both of which could be seen as musical responses to punk rock. Radar Records reissued Parable of Arable Land in 1978 in the UK which came with a flexi-disc, on which was an up-tempo version of Hurricane Fighter Plane recorded in July 1978, with an apparent punk rock influence as well.[2] His collaborations in the 1970s and 1980s read like a roll call of the avant-garde and experimental artists and musicians of the era. The Red Crayola teamed up with the British-American Conceptual Art collective Art & Language,[3] who Thompson described as "the baddest bastards on the block",[4] for three LPs: 1976's Corrected Slogans, 1981's Kangaroo? (also featuring The Raincoats' Gina Birch, Lora Logic and Swell Maps' Epic Soundtracks) and 1983's Black Snakes. Thompson joined Pere Ubu for a period in the early 1980s, performing on their albums The Art of Walking and Song of the Bailing Man, and provided soundtrack music for Derek Jarman. Throughout this time he was prolific as a producer for many other seminal experimental and alternative rock acts, including The Fall (1980's Grotesque (After the Gramme)), The Raincoats, Scritti Politti, Blue Orchids, Cabaret Voltaire, Stiff Little Fingers, Kleenex/LiLiPUT, The Chills and Primal Scream.

Mass - Labour for Love (1981)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

To describe the album briefly, it's like a looser, angrier, and more demented version of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures LP, that doesn't quite do it justice though, it's really worth a listen.
Mass were an English post-punk band formed in 1980, released on EP and one LP and broke up in 1981... Members of the Mass formed Renegade Soundwave and The Wolfgang Press.

Cabaret Voltaire - 7885 Electropunk To Technopop (2CD compilation) 2014

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Cabaret Voltaire release a new compilation #7885 (Electropunk to Technopop 1978 – 1985) on 23 June 2014.
#7885 (Electropunk to Technopop 1978 – 1985) compiles two distinct periods of Cabaret Voltaire – 1978-81 and 1983-85 – for the first time together on one release and follows the re-mastered vinyl release of Red Mecca and already legendary and sold out box set, #8385 (Collected Works 1983 – 1985).
Featuring classic tracks such as Nag Nag Nag, Do The Mussolini (Headkick), Sensoria, Landslide, I Want You and Just Fascination, #7885 (Electropunk to Technopop 1978 – 1985) was curated by Richard H Kirk who explains, “I decided to gather the more concise elements of the work… Hence the choice of 7” singles, edits and shorter album tracks, a kind of sound bite take on CV.”
The compilation travels from 1978-81 with a line up of Richard H Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson, when Cabaret Voltaire were (mostly) recording at the Western Works Studios in Sheffield and releasing records on Rough Trade and from 1983-85 after Watson’s departure when Kirk and Mallinder released via the Some Bizzare label on Virgin Records. Kirk points out that this “was a time where we got to do what we do, but in different areas, we wanted to push the boundaries of electronic music, we wanted to place what we were doing into places where it really shouldn’t be. We certainly didn’t want to carry on repeating what we’d done for the ten years previous.”

Modern Eon - Fiction Tales (1981)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Modern Eon was a British post-punk/new wave band, formed in Liverpool, England in 1978. They released one album, Fiction Tales, on the independent UK label Dindisc in 1981.

The band, originally called Luglo Slugs, was founded by guitarist/vocalist Alix Plain (real name Alex Johnson) and bassist Danny Hampson. After two more name changes, the band (joined by guitarist Ged Allen and drummer Joey McKechnie) decided on the name Modern Eon and released their first recording ("Benched Down/70s Sixties") in late 1978 on the compilation album Street to Street: A Liverpool Album.

After one self-released EP, Pieces, released on Eon Records in 1979, they recorded the single "Euthenics" for Inevitable Records in 1980. Allen and McKechnie left the band in 1980, prior to the recording of their debut album, and were replaced by Bob Wakelin (strings/vocals/percussion) and Tim Lever (guitars/saxophone), with Cliff Hewitt (drums) joining shortly thereafter.

In early 1981, a rerecorded version of "Euthenics" was released as a single on Dindisc followed by two more singles, "Child's Play" and "Mechanic". Fiction Tales was released in mid-1981 to much critical acclaim. After a tour was arranged that year, drummer Hewitt critically injured his wrist, forcing them to go on tour using Hewitt's drum playing on a tape machine. Modern Eon dissolved by the end of 1981 while working on demos for a second album, which was never released.

Lever later played with Dead or Alive, while Hewitt was a member of Apollo 440.

PINPOINT - Third State 1980

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A very underrated album is the full length by Pinpoint which were formed by Arthur Billingsley (AKA Arturo Bassick) in 1978 after he left the Lurkers, compiled by David M. Allen (bass) and Hugh Griffiths (drums) and it's really a shame that this LP received not much attention at the time of its publication. They released overall with the album three 7inches and the most known is their debut single Richmond, all on Albion Records.
This album has 10 great songs on it, a perfect mixture of fast punk numbers (Blind Eyes, Dark & Red), cool synthesizer smasher (Family Life, Waking Up To Morning, Drowning In The Wave Of Life) and simply great wavie tunes (Listen To The Snow, Hospital, Third State) and a fine ballad (Somebody Told Me). This brilliant record receives my full score and belongs in every punk collection.

Cheifs - Holly-West Crisis (1981)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Formed in 1980 and disbanding only two short years later, Chiefs played an active role in the early punk movement with musical peers Black Flag, Circle Jerks, The Stains, The Plugz, and Bad Religion during the genre’s glory days. Chiefs records and compilations remain some of the most sought after punk material of the time period.

Chiefs only released one 7″ EP while still together but would later regroup in the studio to record 6 new tracks that would be compiled with the 7″ material as the Holly-West Crisis vinyl release. This re-release pressing is limited to 1000 copies, so if you missed the last limited pressing in the early 00s, here’s a great chance to snag a classic with a new insert and art design. This is a must for any long-time fans.

If you’re looking for the perfect release to throw you back into the atmosphere of Southern Cali’s punk experience of the early 80s with seedy basement shows and snotty punks, look no further than this exclusive re-issue.
