The Restless - S/T (1984)

In terms of vintage garage-cum-power pop in the environs of Buffalo, NY, the Terry Sullivan helmed Jumpers are one of the few names still readily recalled from the late '70s/early '80s "punk" era.  I featured them eons ago on these pages via their '79 "Sick Girls" 45.  A classic, local or otherwise.  Ironically, after the Jumpers disconnected, Terry went on to front the altogether more ambitious and visible The Restless.  I say ironically in the respect that the Jumpers who only released a local single are lauded and talked about way more than the Restless, who not only recorded a full length, but issued it under the auspices of a major label, Mercury, to be exact, in 1984. Per the norm with '80s mainstream albums, The Restless skewed to the more pedestrian side of the spectrum, but the songs were often well above average.  Shades of the Tubes, not to mention the more flattering side of Reagan-era Cheap Trick abound on sassy, bristling slammers like "The Contender," "1000 X"and "I Wanna Know."  Although they ran circles around most of their AOR contemporaries, The Restless weren't particularly distinct, ergo they were one of many neglected big label casualties of their time.  Maybe folks were too preoccupied with watching the summer Olympics that year.  Mystery solved!  Enjoy (you will).

The Young Lords - S-T LP (1984)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

If the rather graphic depiction on the Young Lords album sleeve (to your left) has you doing a double take, it's probably for a valid reason.  Rage Against the Machine used a photo of the same self-immolating, Vietnamese Buddhist for their debut record as well.  Thing is, barely a modicum of intensity or tumult grazes the agenda of the Lords, a power trio whose modus operandi is par-for-the-course garage rock.  Not a bullet or a bombtrack in sight.  Sonically unremarkable (to be quite honest) these guys drifted from lightweight psych to punkier barroom maneuvers, peppering their tunes with churning organ riffs and occasionally sax.  In spite of frequent generic tendencies, The Lords succeed in a face-value capacity, even exposing shards of character on "Working for the Underground" and "I Want a Doctor Like Elvis Had."  A halfway there cover of "There She Goes Again" (cleverly hidden under the title of "Here She Comes") is somehow not credited to the Velvet Underground. Funny that.

Richard Lloyd - Field Of Fire (1985)

It was released in 1986, seven years after his solo debut, Alchemy. The album was recorded in Stockholm, Sweden, backed mostly by Swedish musicians.

The liner notes state that the album is "dedicated to the lodestone". The album sleeve also includes a quote from St. Paul's epistle to the Romans (chapter 15, verse 13, NIV): "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

Richard Lloyd - Alchemy (1979)

Alchemy is the debut solo album of Television guitarist, Richard Lloyd. It was released in 1979, one year after the break up of Television and the release of their second album, Adventure. Trouser Press called it "a gem of a solo album." Its title track was a minor New York FM radio hit.

It features Lloyd on lead guitar, harmonica, piano and vocals, Matthew Mackenzie on guitar, piano and background vocals, James Mastro (later of the Bongos) on guitar, Fred Smith (of Television) on bass, "Heineken bass" and background vocals, and Vinny DeNunzio (formerly of the Feelies) on drums and background vocals. Producer Michael Young later added guitar and synthesizer overdubs to some tracks, which Lloyd has stated that he strenuously opposed.

The Suicide Commandos - Time Bomb (2017)

The Suicide Commandos release their second album Friday — and given that it’s 39 years in the making, it’s got a particularly appropriate title: “Time Bomb.”

The pioneering Minneapolis punk rock trio — Osgood, bassist Steve Almaas and drummer Dave Ahl — formed in 1975 with a stripped-down, ferocious sound that updated the garage rock of the ’60s for a new generation. They opened the doors for the flood of local bands that followed, including the Replacements, Husker Du and the Suburbs. But their initial run lasted just four years.

Berlin Blondes - S/T (1980)

A late 70's minimal synth wave band from Glasgow, Scotland.
"The first single was released early in 1980, so that was before the phrase 'New Romantic' had been coined. I guess they would have been called 'Futurists'. Something I've noticed from looking in old copies of Sounds mag from 1980 is they often used term "New Musik" for anything weird that used synths".
