BIZARROS - S/T (1979) + Lady Doubonette EP (1976) + Laser Boys EP (1978)

Although other Northeast Ohio post-punk and New Wave acts went on to greater success and notoriety -- Devo, Pere Ubu and the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde all spring immediately to mind -- few were as crucial to the scene's longevity and impact as the Bizarros; the first Akron band signed to a national record deal, the group's frontman Nick Nicholis also operated the fabled Clone label, which issued records by key regional acts including the Waitresses, Tin Huey, Human Switchboard and the Rubber City Rebels. Nicholis formed the Bizarros in late 1976 while a student at the University of Akron, and within months the band signed to Blank Records, the Mercury subsidiary founded by A&R exec Cliff Burnstein for the express purposes of signing Pere Ubu.



Their self-titled debut album did not appear until 1979, however, when it was issued on Mercury proper; in the interim, the Bizarros issued a handful of efforts on Clone, most notably 1977's From Akron, a split LP with fellow hometown favorites the Rubber City Rebels. Day jobs (Nicholis worked as a public schoolteacher) and a lack of label support prohibited the Bizarros from touring nationally, and in 1982 the band finally dissolved, reforming in 1996 to record new material.

In 2003, they completed their first new album in 20 years and released "Can't Fight Your Way Up Town From Here."

Speedtwins - It's More Fun to Compete (1978)

One of the first Dutch punk band, from Arnhem, with an english singer Jody Daniel. They were a band who decided to play punk, rather than punks who started playing punk music. Such as other of the earlier punk bands. They started at the end of 1977 and in 1978 already released this LP 'It's More Fun To Compete', which is not the real punk thing of course. The album was released by Universe on transparant vinyl, but later re-released in a different mix by Philips. This post is the Universe one, produced by Alfred Lagarde. Speedtwins released some more 7"s (including a cover of Who's 'My Generation', which is also on this record. in 1978, changed line up and Jody Daniel died in a motor accident in the early eighties, which effectively also ended Speedtwins.

Grauzone is a swiss post-punk/electronic group from the early 80s, prime material from the Neue Deutsche Welle scene, essentially the Deutsch incarnation of icey, metallic-inhuman electronic rock. Their first LP.

The Spiderz - Pressure (1979)

Some of the punk bands started from scratch, but some evolved from pubrock. The Clash in England, and in The Netherlands, The Flying' Spiderz did the same, this becoming the first punk band. In the punk days they released two albums and various 7"s, and had a fierce live reputation. They were dumped by EMI and the band dropped the name Flying and just became The Spiderz. This post is their first album (or third) 'Pressure', when the band progressed into a more power pop/new wave sort of sound.
