Eleven Pond - Bas Relief (1986)

Eleven Pond, the Rochester, NY band only released a single LP in their time (1986) together before dissolving into obscurity. Their sound merging of post punk, dark dance and synthpop full of melodic arrangements reflected the originality of gifted songwriters who met in art school with a shared interest in 4AD and Factory Records.

3 Men + Black - Acoustic (2005)

3 men are from the Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, and the Jam; Pauline Black is from the Selecter (and so is Nick Welsh, who does not count as a man, apparently). In 2004 they have decided to release an album containing acoustic renditions of some of their songs (or, in the case of Bruce Foxton, mostly his band partner's songs). I'm sharing this mostly because of Jake Burns's contributions, which are of course heavenly. I'm not a big fan of the Stranglers but JJ Burnel's stuff is also quite cool, and Bruce Foxton sounds quite a bit like Paul Weller - that's not a bad thing though. Pauline Black's songs I'm not so fond of, because while I do love the Selecter, I don't think these versions hold up to the regular ones; it's certainly an experiment, and while it doesn't sound like a successful one to my ears, it might to yours. The ballad "Missing Words" is quite nice, actually; it's the ska stuff that rubs me the wrong way played like this. Anyway, if you're a fan of the Stiff Little Fingers (which you really should be), you absolutely NEED the beautiful Jake Burns and the Big Wheel track "She Grew Up". I also quite like this version of a Stranglers track I'm very partial to, the new wave crossover hit "Skin Deep", and two other JJ Burnel's tracks are quite cool, too - a Hawkwind cover "Quark, Strangeness & Charm" and the funny hoedown "Jelly Fish".

Chromagain - Any Colour You Like (1985)

Minimal Electro Wave band Chromagain, hailing from Torino, Italy.

Their ultra rare and sought-after Mini-LP “Any Colour You Like” from 1985 (originally released for the cult italian wave label Supporti Fonografici, home of Weimar Gesang).

Electronic wave, with some debt to New Order's ‘Movement’ and ‘Power, Corruption & Lies’, but also highly original, the tracks are assembling an out of the blue mix between dark and mournful ballads and outbursts of joy for cutting-edge dancefloors.

Surely a true classic and not be missed!

Monuments - Age (1984)

Monuments were founded in January 1981 in Turin, Italy. The band emerged from the ashes of the new wave band Tecknospray (1978–81), where the founding members played side by side as guitarist/keyboardist and bassist/keyboardist. In the new line-up Mauro Tavella (synthesizer and programs) and Andrea Costa (synthesizer and vocals) immediately decided to dedicate themselves exclusively to electro - music. Their aim was to blend traditional pop melodies with the latest synthesized sounds.

Aerial FX — Same River Twice (2010)

In the early ‘80s, a five-piece band based out of Oxford dramatically changed their sound to meld with the surging new wave movement. They adopted the name Aerial FX, releasing two singles and one full album before their abrupt disbandment in the middle of the decade. Now, 25 years later, a full album’s worth of Aerial FX music has surfaced – Same River Twice. With 12 songs that have never seen the light of day until now, Aerial FX’s commemoration will make listeners yearn for a return to the days of new wave with its unabashed upbeat mood and lyrics.

Same River Twice is a fantastic flashback to the ‘80s new wave genre, filled with poppy dance numbers, catchy grooves, and a great rock sound. Sultry, melancholy vocals trade off with light and romantic ones. From the opening track of “Hold Me” through the ending track of “Make It for You (12” Version),” Aerial FX flaunts the genre outstandingly. Guitars collide with synth, from “Heatwave” to “Where Is Tomorrow” to “I See Changes.” However, while the music is very nostalgic and very enjoyable, this is by no means an outstanding album. It fits the mold of the genre for the time, doing all the right things in all the right places, but Aerial FX doesn’t jump out the way that artists such as New Order or Joy Division did. In fact, Aerial FX sounds very reminiscent of these bands and more, making them more of a mirror for the time.

Same River Twice is a solid album and a great reminder of 25 years ago. However, it is a repeat journey, as the album title implies, down the same river as many other bands. Aerial FX is a way to reminisce on the good old days as much as possible.

The Kids ‎– The Kids & Naughty Kids (40th Anniversary Edition) (2018)

40th Anniversary Edition comes in a digipak with a 20 page booklet. The debut album "The Kids" (tracks 1-13) was recorded winter 1977 and released in February 1978 on Philips. "Naughty Kids" (tracks 14-27) was released in November 1978 on Fontana.
